Volgograd city history
There is an interesting and rich history in Volgograd with a lot of historical monuments, culture and architecture.
Volgograd has the status of Hero City of Russia because the Battle of Stalingrad happened here during World War II.
It was one of the turning points of World War II and the largest battle in mankind history. Stalingrad city was totally destroyed during the battle lasted for about seven months. The city was awarded status of Hero City in 1945.
The Battle of Stalingrad is commemorated by large memorial complex dominated by Mother Russia monument. The monument is erected on Mamayev Kurgan - the hill of numerous fights during the battle.
There are various artifacts of World War II in Panorama museum located nearby. For example the museum has Vasily Zaytsev sniper rifle. Vasily Zaytsev is famous Russian sniper. You have the opportunity to know more about him with the help of Hollywood movie Enemy at the gate.
