Riding through Brazil: Useful tips

Like any other country, to get into Brazil with your vehicle you must get a permit for it. When you approach any brazilian border, you´ll have to get your passport stamped by the "Polícia Federal", once you already got your passport stamped in, you must find the "Receita Federal" to get your permit.  There are many legends about getting the permit or expired permits.

When you get a permit for your vehicle, it's valid for 90 days and then you can renew for 90 days more. you won't  renew your permit at any border in Brazil, to renew your permit you must go to the Receita Federal main offices around Brazil, to get the adress of the nearest Receita Federal go to http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br.

The permit must be renewed before it expires, otherwise you'll have to pay a fine when leaving the country. So what happens if you have your bike broken down and won't be able to leave the country with your bike in time?? The answer is, fill a form at the Receita Office applying for an extension to your permit due to a broken vehicle and gather all the paper you may have to prove it.

If for some reason, you find yourself with an expired permit, there's no need to panic, nobody will seize your bike for it, all that's going to happen is that there will be a fine of 10 % of the declared price of the bike when you entered Brazil, that's all.

In case you get in trouble or have doubts involving paperwork, accidents or any other issues in Brazil, you can contact the BIKERS HELP DESK (www.bikershelpdesk.blogspot.com) which in fact is a group of bikers who organized themselves to help overlanders and have a wide list of valuable contacts, the BIKERS HELP DESK has helped overlanders from all over the world with most different issues, medical issues, visas, parking, transport of bikes out of Brazil, selling bikes after the long trip, etc.

I needed a great mechanic in Brasil and I found him in Cascavel (Paranah State) at Star Motos, Cascavel. Ask for Anderson Nunes. He has ridden RTW - twice and he really knows his stuff. Was trained by BMW Motoradd bafore the dealership closed.
