Workshops and Tech Sessions belowLorraine ChittockAFRICA—Mud Huts & Malls—Myths & Reality |
Why do so few riders take on the challenges of Africa compared to other continents? Lorraine thinks she has some answers.
Ever wonder why so few riders take on Africa? Lorraine might have some answers. Hint: it's not Boko Haram, ISIS or Ebola. Lorraine is on a mission to lure the ever-increasing stream of motorcyclists touring past her cabin in Chile, to the magic of A F R I C A. Lorraine will ride you through the myths and realities: from mud huts, shopping malls, Chinese cities, the motorcycle invasion, wild lives, and wildlife.
Lorraine also reveals details of her fall in Uganda. After 5 1/2 months of isolated concussion recovery, Lorraine can't think of better therapy than being amongst riders, and to celebrate nearly 15 years as a HU supporter! Find out why she's eager to return to the crash site, and if the accident has changed her film, Rallying for A Wild Life—Motorcycles in Africa.
Lorraine made her first solo trip age 18 on a Honda CB360. She's ridden with 200 camels across Sudan and traveled the Americas in a Chevy. 2014 marked a return to Africa to work on her first motorcycle film, Rallying. Lorraine is the author of 6 travel books. Her cabin overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Chile is now a haven for travelers in the HU community.
Chelsea SouthardUnleash the Kraken - A woman's tale of art, adventure and her journey around America |
At 24 years old, almost two year ago, I finished my Bachelors at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Before leaving I sold everything I had, went and got my motorcycle license, got involved in a Burning Man project and flew across country to build art and a new lifestyle for myself. After Burning Man I went to San Francisco, bought my first motorcycle which I named the Kraken, worked as a courier for two weeks and with just about 1000 miles under my belt embarked on an almost two month journey across America.
A year later I rode back across, going the northern route this time. Now I am in San Francisco preparing for the next chapter, RTW. I will present to you a collection of stories, some of laughter, some of fear, joy, sadness, courage and perseverance. But most of all love. The love of life, the love of adventure and the love of this beautiful world. I will also talk about the plans, route and vision that make up the next steps of this journey.
Chelsea Southard has traveled solo across America twice on her motorcycle. She is an artist, a maker, and dreamer who seeks to inspire others with hopes of instilling change and growth throughout the world. Chelsea and her partner Alex Goldman are currently in San Francisco preparing for next years departure of their four year RTW journey. Since they are both artists and share the love of adventure; their mission is to travel by motorcycle to the major hubs of the world, building art in public spaces in collaboration with communities and the indigenous materials that surround them while having the adventure of a lifetime and inspiring others have one of their own.
Jenny MorganAmerican Idyll - exploring rural USA |
Coast to coast and back again - the evolution of the Trans-America Trail
The sheer diversity of geography on offer in the United States offers the dual-sport adventure rider an unrivalled challenge and world-class scenery. In the early summer of 2015, Jenny rode solo from the west coast to the east, then back again via the latest incarnation of the Trans-America Trail. Travelling through the the heart of rural America, the TAT offers the adventure rider a unique glimpse of life away from the traditional tourist traps of tinseltown USA.
Double or Nothing! - Do you really need it, and will it fit in 39 litres - compact packing tips for a life on the trail.
A wise man once said: 'Overweight is underprepared' - Jenny Morgan takes up this challenge, and shows you how to pack everything you need for an indefinite period on (and off) the road, into a minimalist luggage system. This practical demonstration includes tips on camping equipment, clothes, tools, spares, tech and navigation - and illustrates that with careful planning and consideration, a little can actually go a very long way indeed.
Jenny is an experienced solo adventure overland traveller and occasional rally raid racer. She has ridden in North and South America, Europe and North Africa. She is also a key member of the Rally Raid Products/Honda CB500X Adventure bike development team.
Jeremy Kroeker, Motorcycle TherapyThrough Dust and Darkness - KLR 650 through the Middle East |
Through Dust and Darkness - Crappy KLR through Europe, Middle East & North Africa.
Jeremy is a Mennonite with a motorcycle. When his seemingly unflinching faith in a Christian worldview begins to shift, Kroeker hops on his bike to seek answers from another perspective. After shipping his ride to Europe, Kroeker discovers that the machine wobbles back and forth worse than his own opinions about spirituality. Still, he caries on, oscillating through Europe—Germany, Austria, Croatia, Albania—and into the Middle East - Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and, ultimately, Iran.
It is there, in the theocratic nation of Iran, that Kroeker finds himself on a forbidden visit to a holy Muslim Shrine. Once inside, invisible hands reach into his chest and rip from his heart a sincere prayer, his first in many years. And God hears that prayer. For before Kroeker can escape Iran, God steals into his hotel room one night to threaten him with death. At least, that's one way to look at it...
Jeremy Kroeker is a freelance writer, a speaker, and the award-winning author of two books, 'Motorcycle Therapy: A Canadian Adventure in Central America' and 'Through Dust and Darkness: A Motorcycle Journey of Fear and Faith in the Middle East.' With his motorcycle, he has traveled to 30 countries while managing to do at least one outrageously stupid thing in every one. He has evaded police in Egypt, tasted teargas in Israel, scrambled through minefields in Bosnia and Lebanon, and wrangled a venomous snake in Austria. One time he got a sliver in El Salvador.
Jeremy's most recent book is 'Motorcycle Messengers'. Ask him to autograph it for you!

Sam ManicomUnder Asian Skies - The most colourful and culturally diverse part of the world? |
Under Asian Skies - The most colourful and culturally diverse part of the world?
Asia and the Middle East frequently have the reputation for being one of the most troubled parts of the world. Should an Overlander fear this reputation and stay at home? Common sense says not to expect smoke without fire, but that frequently the fire is tiny and should not extinguish dreams of travel across this stunningly beautiful continent. The terrain and cultural diversity make it almost impossible for a traveller not to be enthralled, challenged and delighted. This is a true continent of the unexpected. Give it enough time and respect and it will reveal its delights to you. Is Asia the most colourful and culturally diverse part of the world? I think so. But why?
Travel Addiction - It's a dangerous thing isn't it?
Parents, lock up your children! Don't let them anywhere near Horizons Unlimited! They will come away having a taste for something dangerous! This addiction will make them afraid and uncertain, and will bring things out of them that you may well prefer to remain hidden. It needs expensive long term care and careful handling. Be warned, your medical insurance company provides no cover for this. Travel. It's a downright dangerous, mind altering drug of the worst kind... isn't it? So how do you cope with the uncertainties and the risks?
Sam made his first solo trip age 16. He's travelled by bicycle, sail, backpack & has hitchhiked across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. His longest trip was 8 years & 200,000 miles by motorcycle around the world. Sam is a travel writer & author of 4 motorcycle travel books.
Excerpt from Sam's best-selling book, Under Asian Skies:
"... the blue van smashed into the bike from the left. It hurled us across to the central reservation, and I ended up wedged under the bike with petrol pouring out of the carburettors onto my legs…. On the other side of the reservation cars sped past, just by my head. I could hear them and feel their draft, but trapped under the bike I couldn't twist enough to see them or get further away. The first three people to get to me roared up on bikes. They were Australian Hell's Angels..."
'One of the best story tellers of adventure in the world today!'
'Gripping from start to finish. 'Truly inspiring writing!'

Joe Berk, CSC MotorcyclesMoto Colombia and Riding China |
Moto Colombia!
Joe Berk's ride through Colombia's Andes Mountains was more than just another adventure tour…it was an exposure to one of the largest motorcycle markets on the planet and a first-hand, up close look at the Colombian motorcycle industry. Motorcycling is huge in Colombia for a variety of reasons – motorcycles are so popular there's a motorcycle for one in every eight Colombians. The Colombian motorcycle industry has been growing 20% annually for the last several years, and the Colombian motorcycle market is bigger than ours. In Colombia, motorcycles have gone from being drug cartel assassins' tools to the country's dominant form of transportation.
Invited to participate in an 8-day circumnavigation of the Andes by AKT Motos (one of the largest manufacturers in Colombia), Berk rode with Juan Carlos Posada (founder and editor of De Motos magazine) from the shores of the steamy Caribbean to the smoldering rim of the Los Nevados del Ruiz volcano (an active volcano that killed 23000 Colombians just a few years ago). Anteaters, monkeys, giant iguanas, rustic villages, jungles, beaches, a ferry ride on the Magdalena River to historic Mompos, and more – the photo ops, the roads, the riding, the scenery, and the cuisine were incredible. Berk rode AKT Motos' version of the CSC RX3, a 250cc adventure touring motorcycle earning a reputation as a world-class touring bike.
Joe's presentation will focus on his ride through Colombia, the Colombian motorcycle industry, and the AKT Motos organization. Those wishing to gain an advance look can do so by reading Berk's book, Moto Colombia! Copies will be available at the Horizons Unlimited CSC Motorcycles booth.
Riding China - 8,800-kilometer ride across China on 250cc Zongshen motorcycles
Explore China with CSC Motorcycles' Joe Berk as he describes the ride of a lifetime across 8,800 kilometers of excitement, altitude, freezing cold, relentless rain, and sweltering humidity. Ride the Tibetan plateau at 14,000 feet, take a camel ride across the Gobi Desert, follow the Silk Road, parallel the Great Wall of China from its western end all the way to Beijing, see Xi'an's Terra Cotta soldiers, walk the courtyards of Beijing's Forbidden City, stroll the ancient streets of Pingyao, meet Chinese motorcyclists, and swim in the Yellow Sea at the very spot Berk's US Army missiles targeted more than 40 years ago. Berk recently returned from a photo expedition across China on his 250cc RX3, and he wants to share the adventure with you.
Joe Berk writes the CSC blog. He has written 14 books including several on motorcycle travel. Berk has been riding for more than 50 years. In the last 12 months, he completed rides on his 250cc RX3 in China, Colombia, Mexico, and the United States.
Tom MedemaRally for Rangers - Mongolia |
In 2014 and 2015 a total of 35 riders embarked on a rally across northern Mongolia to bring new Yamaha AG200 motorcycles to park rangers who desperately needed them. These rangers are attempting to protect some of the last pristine land in Asia from development, poaching, and mining, and were doing so on horseback and 40 year old Russian motorcycles held together with baling wire and duct tape.
All 35 bikes were delivered and are now in use helping rangers stop poaching, illegal mining and other detrimental activities in Lake Hovsgol National Park and the Darkhad Valley.
Today, these rangers can cover vast territory without fear of breaking down, all through the efforts of the Mongol Ecology Center's Blue Waves Motorcycle Rally and the 20 volunteers who raised the funds to purchase the bikes, fly to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and ride 1000 miles through the vast steppe of central Asia to personally deliver the bikes.
Rally for Rangers is gearing up for another delivery in 2017 and is seeking interested riders. Join RfR founder Tom Medema for this inspiring film and information about next years Rally.

Joe & Garrett McCulloughAcross America to swim with sharks! and |
Across America to swim with sharks!
We start off with a Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000, 1000 miles in 24 hours from Scottsdale AZ to Austin TX for the US MotoGP. But our real goal was Key West FL by following the coast along the Gulf of Mexico. We fought rain, hail, tornados, mosquitos, bad drivers, and breakdowns. All to swim with sharks in the Keys. Along the way we discover the good in people, how to camp for free, and can we get along without killing each other for 46 days, 24 hours a day! This was a journey of discovery, and a chance for a father and son to reconnect and bond again. We have some great pictures, real world information, funny stories, and will entertain you with our travels.
Area 51 and the line of death!
We travel the mysterious Area 51 to look for aliens and UFOs! Close to the end of our 8,500 mile trip across America we decided to go see Area 51. We wanted to see for ourselves what's really going on there. Are they hiding aliens there? Will we see UFOs? We will show you details very few have seen and even caught one of the infamous "Cammo Dudes" trying to spy on us! We went to the front main entrance, found the mysterious "Black Mailbox", went to the famous Little A'Le'Inn, camped at the main back gate, stepped across the "line of death", and found a secret back gate and a sniper! We saw strange lights and found out maybe there is something going on there! We will give you a presentation you won't soon forget.
Joe & Garrett McCullough are a Father and Son team that travel across the country on their motorcycles. They just finished a 46 day 8,500 mile trip across the southern US with many adventures and overcame many obstacles.
Chris BakerCuba: Land of Eccentricity and Enigma |
Yes, motorcycle touring in Cuba IS possible!
In 1996, travel writer and motojournalist Christopher P. Baker shipped his BMW R100GS PD to Cuba and rode 7,000 miles to research the Moon Cuba guidebook. His literary travelog 'Mi Moto Fidel: Motorcycling Through Castro's Cuba' was published by National Geographic Press.
In 2012 Christopher led the first group motorcycle tours of Cuba for U.S. citizens since the Revolution. In this visually stunning presentation, Christopher recalls that journey... provides a sensual portrait of this communist island of eccentricity, eroticism, and enigma... and profiles his most recent two-wheel journeys around Cuba.
Adventure motojournalist Christopher P. Baker has written about motorcycle touring for such publications as Adventure Motorcycle, BMW ON, BWM Motorcycle Magazine, CNN Travel, Motorcyclist, National Geographic Traveler, and Rider. He famously rode his BMW R100GS around Cuba in 1996, and currently leads group motorcycle tours of Cuba.Alain DespatieRiding to Ngurrumpa - A motorcycle journey through Australian aboriginal land |
It all started like the ordinary round-the-world adventure. The bike is set, there is a timeline, an itinerary, a budget. He has said his goodbyes to his wife and friends. All was well for the first week, until Alain meets a senior aboriginal uncle who thought of a different ride. On a two-wheel walkabout, Alain is about to discover what blackfellas call "Connection to Country." Interweaving between white and black world, the lessons at times are difficult to hear. Alain never left the country on that trip, keeping on pulse on "singing the land" wherever the motorcycle took him. It is hard to know if he has ever returned...
Alain unhooked from life in 2013 after a layoff from the computer world. He spent one year exploring Australia to return to California and replenish the bank for the next leg of the journey. When not travelling Alain busies himself building a tiny-house-on-wheels for the returns from the road.
Carla King and Jonathan EhlyNavigating Magical Baja |
We like to describe central Baja as a combination of the Galapagos Islands and Namibia that's only a day and a half's ride from San Diego. Its natural beauty and the opportunities for exploration by land, sea and air are endless. Baja has always been friendly to tourists and expats, and tourists flock to the northern and southern ends of the peninsula. But it's the central area between the Sea of Cortez and Scorpion Bay on the Pacific that calls to us, as it retains the original feel of old Baja.
Ride your dirt bike, your adventure bike, heck, even your Harley. There's no wrong way to explore Baja. Lately we've been trailering our KTM dirt bikes along with inflatable paddleboard-kayaks and camping gear to keep our options open.
We look forward to showing you a lesser-known network of dirt and tarmac through landscapes that range from the rugged and pine-scented Sierra San Pedro Martir Mountains to desert ranchitas to glittering seas. We'll explore seaside wonders like Bahia de Los Angeles with its hundreds of thousands of dolphins frolicking in the sparkling blue waters among stark islands rising from the Sea of Cortez and Scammons Lagoon on the Pacific Coast for spectacular whale watching.
Travel with us through the Catavina Desert with its thick-trunked elephant trees and Boojum forests, a surreal landscape borrowed by Dr. Suess to illustrate his children's books. Further south we bump along arroyos and oasis to the 7000-year old San Borjitas cave paintings. These are just a few of the opportunities we'll show you to inspire a plan for your ride to Baja's undiscovered treasures.
ALSO, How to set up a 4x4 vehicle with camping and motorcycle/bicycle hauler for less than $5000
Carla King is an adventure travel author who has specialized in solo explorations of the world on a series of cranky indigenous motorcycles. Jonathan Ehly is also a world traveler and he has been exploring Baja for over 30 years by motorcycle, 4x4, boat and small aircraft to seek out hidden trails, remote valleys and secluded bays. We've spent the last year exploring Baja together, and have chosen Mulegé and Bahia Concepcion as our base for continued explorations.

Walt and Nancy will share some tips and tricks learned over a million plus miles both on and off road: suggestions on gear, technique, focus, awareness, pitfalls, surprises and will address anything that comes up during the 40-minute presentation.
Walt Fulton and Nancy Foote, owners of Streetmasters Motorcycle Workshops, are focused on rider safety - both on and off the pavement. Already ride in the dirt? This is an excellent opportunity to refresh your skills under the watchful eye of an avid off-road instructor. The day will start with an hour or so working on dirt-specific skills before heading out to some local dirt roads. How to market your books using social media tools, blog tours, mailing list newsletters and media outreach. Especially exciting are very new options this year for easy-to-create full-color ebooks for the iPad and Kindle Fire.
Carla King's motorcycle misadventures began at age 14 in rural North Carolina when she identified the broken down Honda Enduro in the barn as her escape vehicle. Her dad told her, "If you can fix it you can ride it," unaware that he was setting her up for a career in adventure travel. She started with day-long jaunts through tobacco fields and creeks and, when the family moved to California, the coast and the mountains throughout the state.
A six-week solo journey through France in the 80s led to months-long sojourns in Europe, China, Africa, and India. In the mid-90s Carla combined her love of travel, technology, mechanics, writing, and publishing to create the first realtime online travelogue (now called blogs), and began publishing her work and helping others self-publish. Wherever she is, you can find out more about Carla and her writing at CarlaKing.com.
Reg Kittrelle"I didn't see him!" ...and here's why |
Looking vs. Seeing. Not understanding the difference can get you hurt.
A common excuse found in accident reports is, "I didn't see him!" There are physical and psychological reasons why this can actually be true; they really DIDN'T see that motorcycle they just plowed into. I will explain these reasons, and show you how to help avoid being the subject of an accident report, either as the victim, or the one causing it.

The journey should begin now...not later!
Life is too short; so don't wait for the right time to go on an adventure. In this class, you will hear how life can throw a curve ball in your plans and how to change course while still pursing your dreams of an overland adventure. Learn how to deal with budget and plans that were made as a couple and revise them for a solo rider/driver. Also learn how to use resources from friends, social media and even from strangers. On top of that, you will also learn how to gain confidence and strength to strike out on your own.
This will be a round table style presentation...to engage the audience into thinking and maybe start planning for their own travel.
You Rode What? Traveling on a small bike
This "show and tell" demo of Ginamarie's Yamaha TW200. She will explore the "small-bike" philosophy: Go light, go simple— that's the theory behind a small-cc adventure bike. Many riders have successfully accomplished epic rides using this philosophy. This demo will cover the advantages and disadvantages of the all-conquering uber-bike route to motorcycling freedom. Is it the right way for you?
Ginamarie Austin, a motorcycle rider who is learning how to stand on her two feet again after losing her husband to cancer. Now, she is learning how to maintain her own motorcycle and rode a 200cc Yamaha dual sport bike on a trip of a lifetime on the back roads of North America. She also will be sharing her experiences, strength and hope with others on the road.
