Tips for the Compass Expedition Road of Bones Tour
Essential info from a survivor of the 2018 R.O.B. tour (London to Magadan)

I could not refuse the opportunity to experience a journey riding from the one side of the civilised world to the other, London to Magadan, passing through 15 different countries, climbing mountains and crossing rivers, rain and shine, from -5 to +44 degrees Celsius. I discovered things about myself that I would not otherwise have found, dealt with all sorts of people and situations, and rode my own motorcycle my way, wherever I needed to go. I want to help you consider this journey and decide if it is right for you, and what to do to ensure that you are prepared. This might sound like a bit of a sales pitch, but it may be more along the lines of a warning. Venture on the trip at your peril - you just might enjoy it!

AJ Murray, Road of Bones tour

AJ MURRAY is a long distance touring rider who only recently discovered the fun of adventure bikes. She has been riding for decades through and around countries such as New Zealand, Australia, U.K., Europe, U.S.A., and Mexico.

Little Bikes, Big Places
A fella and lady do North and South America

Aussie couple palms off work and flies to Chile to buy cheap bikes. They ride around for about five months (Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador) and then sell the bikes. Then they fly to the U.S.A. to buy two bikes, and repeat. A cheap-and-cheerful summary of two idiots' travels.

ROB GORDON is a fella who, with his Missus, flew to Chile and bought wee motorcycles. Happiness and grand adventurs on a fairly low-budget.

Just Do It!
You don't need a fancy motorbike or big budget. And the world is different than how we perceive it at home.

When he graduated from college, Jasper got on his old motorbike with a small budget and started riding from home (Amsterdam) and through Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. He's currently still on-the-road on his way to HU Snowy 2018! He shows that you don't need a fancy motorbike, the latest equipment, a large budget, detailed plans, or a lot of experience to travel the world solo on a motorbike. Just do it!

Another thing that Jasper took away from this trip is that the world out there is different than how most of us perceive it at home. For example, he was originally leery of "dangerous" Pakistan and wanted to quickly cross the country in a couple of days to reach India. Instead, he fell in love with Pakistan's stunning natural beauty, amazing people, and incredible riding routes - and ended up staying in Pakistan for two months. Hear all about it.

JASPER is a college graduate who started riding his motorbike from his home in Amsterdam and will have made it as far as Australia by the time you meet him. He's currently in Melbourne and will make his way to #HUSnowy 2018. Maybe you'll meet him on the road!

MC Swapping Around the World
An option to make international motorcycle travel simpler

More than a decade ago, I attended my first Horizons Unlimited event. The penny dropped and my thought was, "If HE can do it, so can I!" Despite riding motorcycles for most of my life, I did not have the confidence or even state of mind that it would be possible for me to ride around the world. By attending several HU Travellers Meetings where I learned more and heard more of the experiences of other riders, I developed the appetite for Global Motorcycle Riding.

Fast-forward to today: I own, co-own, or have access to seven motorcycles strategically located around the world. Each year, I plan two international rides on one of them. I share ideas on how you, too, can swap motorcycles with other owners around the world.

Ove Gehrmann

OVE GEHRMANN lives in Australia, but owns, co-owns or has access to several motorcycles around the world (e.g., New Zealand, U.K., USA). He makes sure to go adventuring a couple of times each year. Global motorcycle swapping makes it oh-so-simple.

The Adventures of Tex and Bundy
Our adventures, charity work, a little about my 'Round Oz record and endurance riding, AND our jet ski adventures.

Come and hear the Adventures of Tex (Aussie bloke and submarine veteran) and Bundy (Tex's stumpy-tailed cattle dog). This duo raises funds for much-needed local charities and are the Official Champions of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Ambassadors to Red Nose, Welfare Officer for Coffs Harbour Veterans Centre, and more. Hear about Tex's success to ride 15,500 km in just under nine days for an Around Oz Record (1978). If time allows, also enjoy "Tex Does Europe!" (2017) - a 8,000 km quick squirt over a few weeks. Informative, sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious.

Boats from the shore

Each year, TEX O'GRADY and BUNDY travel around 80,000 km for charity fundraising efforts all over Australia. Bundy is an Australian stumpy-tailed cattle dog who is now over one-million-kilometres-old travelling on motorcycles.

Islands Passion
Iceland, Faroe Islands, Estonian Islands, Aland Island, Sakhalin and Shikotan

I've got a tattoo on my hand. It consists of the cartoons from Moana, because we are so alike. I fell in love with islands and have visited plenty of them beginning with Iceland to Shikotan (100 km from Japan). I will tell you about the amazing feeling of staying almost alone in the freezing land of ice, amazing colours, untouched nature, cute lambs, majestic waterfalls, and severe weather. Or maybe you wanto to hear the not-so-pleasant story of losing my brakes near Baikal Lake, real Russian soul, one young bear, eating cookies, the story of killing a little bird, Shikotan-style luxury look, and deep ocean of Siberian forests. You want stories? I've got many of them. Let's start!

KATRINA DUBANEVICH is a mototraveller, dreamer and crazy girl with seven years of motorcycling, five of them spent travelling as often as possible. She evolved from solo trips on a little Minsk motorcycle through Europe to long solo trips for thousands of miles. Her husband is her inspiration. Her special passion for islands have led her, so far, to the Danish islands, Iceland, the Faroe islands, Estonian islands, Vestmannaeyjar, Aland island, Sakhalin, and Shikotan (Kurily Island). She started her solo RTW trip on August 18th to cross Russia to Vladivostock, and then send motorcycle by sea to Australia and arrive in Melbourne on 21 of October to meet you all at HU Snowy!

Pakistan and the Karakoram Highway
Riding the Karakoram Highway amid spectacular scenery of northern Pakistan, including assitance with visa.

Humbled and deeply moved from his experiences on the bike, travelling and trekking, Hamza (affectionately known as Shah) is now driven to bring others to share the experiences of riding the Karakoram Highway and the spectacular scenery of northern Pakistan. He provides information for assistance with everything to do with riding in Pakistan, a major destination on the cross-Asia-to-Europe world rides. Topics covered: visa support for overland riders, security concerns, ride routes, and sharing in-depth knowledge of travelling through this greatly misunderstood country.

Northern Pakistan is truly spectacular! We showcase images from some of our favourite riding routes in Gilgit Baltistan. Karakoram Bikers is an adventure motorbike travel company providing services for travel in Pakistan.

HAMZA MOBEEN and LIZ NORMAN are passionate about riding. Hamza has been riding since he could walk. As soon as he was able, he hit the road and headed north into the rugged mountains of Gilgit Baltistan and found the place of his heart. There is a connection one gets being on the road amongst such mind-blowing scenery as the Karakoram Mountains and Himalayas. Shah and his Australian partner, Liz, now runs the adventure motorbike travel company Karakoram Bikers.

The Biggest Mistake of Our Lives
The birth of Compass Expeditions International Motorcycle Tours

Mick used to be a truck driver and tour leader for an overland adventure company in South America when a client on his tour made a special impression on him. She was Cathy McLean who had been diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia at the age of 27. This disease, which attacks the nervous system and often causes premature death, sparked Mick to organize a fundraising motorcycle adventure in support. This is the story of how Mick and his partners began adventure motorcycle tour company Compass Expeditions and the rocky road to success. Ten years on and Compass Expeditions is going from strength to strength, forever increasing the long list of destinations that Mick and his team take riders to around the world.

MICK McDONALD is co-founder and expedition leader of Compass Expeditions, an author and veteran of the travel industry.

Making Life Easier On The Road
What I made pre-journey that made life easier, safer, and more comfortable

I have lived and ridden in Africa, Europe, and Australia. I have ridden in heat and cold, so I know that little things that are a nuisance on a short ride can become very uncomfortable after a week or longer. The extreme inconvenience of having something stolen and even the dreadful nuisance of stinky wet luggage cry for solutions.

I'm a scientist who likes to find solutions. So I made several items before we set off to ride through South and Central America such as luggage security and ladies underwear. Find out why I made the things that I did before our journey, and how I did so.

LIZ KEALY is a scientist, business owner, and mum. She's been riding for 40 years and has traveled through Africa, Europe, and Australia. In 2017, she rode 40,000 km through 16 countries in Africa and the Americas. Former works: BMW rider, Ducati road-racer and WIMA State Captain. Motorcycling "Man" of the Year, 1987. Co-founder of the Toy Run.

It's the Little Things That Amuse
What remains after a trip are the anecdotes and what makes you laugh

Overland riding can be draining, so early in our journey I resolved to make us both laugh before 9:30 AM every day. A year on: Mission accomplished! From Mrs. Garmin dropping her knickers to being kissed by policemen; from making jokes in Spanish to drinking with an Inca; and from racing a guanaco to declining party invitations from beautiful Spanish girls. You can never predict what each day on the road will bring! Told by a broadcaster, writer, and raconteur, be prepared to laugh along!

STEVE KEALY is a motorcycle journalist and editor who has lived in 10 countries. An ex-roadracer, he gets lost on longer racetracks. Steve is a co-founder of apartheid-busting South African Toy Run, now in its 38th year. In 2017, Steve and partner-in-crime Liz rode 40,000 km through 16 countries in Africa and the Americas.

Plan? What Plan?!
How to have fun whilst going with the flow

An Englishwoman nearing 50 leaves home to join a young Dutch motorcycle traveller she met whilst backpacking in India. She returns and buys her own 500cc Enfield motorbike in Chennai. She thinks this little adventure might last six months, but trails cheerfully around with him for four years until they reach Australia where he decides to stay. She wonders what to do...go home or carry on alone?

Jacqui Furneaux

After a perfectly normal and fulfilling life as a nurse, wife and mother, JACQUI FURNEAUX's world turned upside-down and she found myself alone. There was nothing for it, but to leave the U.K. and go travelling. Whilst backpacking in India, she met a young Dutch motorcycle traveller... and her life was changed forever.

Iceland and the Faroes: Stark Beauty
Far out of the way, but these islands reward the effort to reach them

The night before I'd arrived in early March 2017, half a metre of snow fell across Iceland. Riding a snowmobile for the first time was an amazing experience, but, more than anything, I wanted to see what the island was like underneath that thick layer of icing. The answer? Spectacular. But I wouldn't know that until I returned, almost by accident, four months later. Join me on a brief tour of the sub-Arctic fringes of the old Norse culture, where human influence has shaped the land almost as much as the tectonic forces below and the carving winds above to create a unique landscape for the independent traveller to explore.

Writing For Magazines
What editors and, more importantly, readers look for in travel writing

Travel writing can be a truly rewarding activity whether for your own purposes alone or to inspire, inform and entertain others. If you want to do the latter, now or in the future, then writing for magazines can be a great way to reach an established audience hungry for your stories and to get feedback from the people who publish them. I co-founded Overland Magazine with its editor Paddy Tyson in 2011 and remain a roving sub-editor and contributor. Overland is a UK-based quarterly print title (available in Australia) that is dedicated to motorcycle travel writing and photography and which has given many new writers an opportunity to get into print. In this free-ranging session, I outline the requirements that new writers should expect to meet and discuss some practical considerations behind the goal of getting published.

Nich Brown

NICH BROWN and his 500cc Enfield Bullet 'Joy' are currently meandering around the world in a very haphazard way. In the 35 years between reading Jupiter's Travels and co-founding Overland Magazine, Nich was already an experienced bike traveller before he decided to try living on the road full-time.

One Bloody Percent To Go!
Or a couple of drink cans and some old wire: A bodger's tale

A 3800-km journey, only to break down 38km away. Xander's cross-country journey from Perth to the HU Snowy Mountains last year challenged his ability to bodge - from a blown exhaust gasket to a fired starter solenoid. This will be a light-hearted look at a ride that did not go quite as planned but was still a hell of a lot of fun. It will also give some insights into the art of the bodge or "MacGyvering". Sometimes you just must get going, with or without the "right" tools, parts, etc., and a little ingenuity (and maybe a mullet) can go a long way when you're stuck at the side of the road.

Xander covers what it takes to be MacGyver and the thought process that makes a bodge. He'll talk about what to pack in your bodger kit. This session will be greatly enhanced by the contributions of attendees, so bring your stories and tips on how to Macgyver with the best of them!

Capturing Your Journey

Whether you are going around the world, a weekend adventure or a blast in the bush, capturing and sharing your journey is an important part of the experience. Photography is both an artistic endeavour and a technical discipline. In this workshop, you get valuable tips on how to combine: art and technique to capture those moments and share your story. This workshop will give you practical skills to create the images that tells your story. I'll give you the top 10 tips that improve photo composition the way you want them to look. We will explore the mysteries of post-processing, and a brief look at how Lightroom can be used to make your photos come alive. We will look at the various types of cameras and what other gear you will need to consider for your style of photography. We will also cover the while retaining quick to access while travelling on a motorbike.

Custom Ear Molds /
Mechanical Maintenance Workshop /
Packing Smarter

1. Custom Ear Molds (Sat + Sun mornings)

A standard set of custom earplugs costs $85. We encourage you to get one colour per ear to help tell them apart (included in the price). The whole process takes up to an hour (depending on person), especially as we try to make sure riding ones are comfortable under helmets – so BRING YOUR HELMET FOR FITTING.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT: Make sure your ears are clean – just an earbud is usually enough, but many people need to use waxsolv or an ear syringe/bulb. If you have any issues with regular wax build-up, please make sure your ears are fully cleaned before coming in. We will not be able to proceed if we find heavy wax build-up as the moulding process could cause problems. Likewise, with cuts, scratches or dry skin, or excessive hair.

2. Mechanical Maintenance Workshop

So you think about travelling the wide open (unpopulated) spaces, but the travellers who have done it seem so blasé about the subject, which is ok if you can overhaul a motorbike in the middle of the Simpson Desert with an old boot, a Swiss army knife and a pair of pliers... but not everyone is a mechanic. This interactive workshop session will focus on the main mechanical aspects of motorcycle preventative maintenance and minor repairs. Although this is not a hands-on session, Xander will demonstrate some items on a bike. Topics include: oil change; air cleaner maintenance; daily and weekly checks; chain tension and adjustment; tyre pressures and wheel inspections; wheel bearings; chains and sprockets; clutch and brake adjustment; electrical fault finding; basic fault finding methodology (i.e., she's not going, and where do I start).

3. Packing Smarter

'Overweight is underprepared' has become an anthem for overlanders. However, the debate of what to bring and how much to carry is as enduring as what is the best bike. It is agreed that 'the lighter the better', but what does that mean? What do you need to 'live on the road'? We will explore some of the advances in camping and motorcycle gear designed to be lighter and more comfortable than ever before. Be it a week end, a week or a year, the advances in gear may make your travels more enjoyable (or at least easier).

LOTS of presentations to come! As people register to present we'll list them here.

How about you? We're all here to learn, and there's LOTS to learn! We want to do more presentations and seminars - but we need volunteers to give them! Any topic you can contribute having to do with motorcycle travel, maintenance, planning etc, lasting 20 minutes or more, would be great. Please contact us here to volunteer.

Facing Fears Alone in the Simpson Desert
Preparation & execution of a solo crossing

Have you ever felt like there was a destination, a route, a challenge that was beyond you and your abilities? For Sarah, that was a crossing of the Simpson Desert. Inspired by explorers in history, and the challenge and danger of an isolated, unforgiving desert, Sarah set about preparing for a solo crossing - from getting a bike set up for the ride, selecting the right gear, and preparing physically and mentally for the challenge that most people thought she would fail at. Sarah will discuss this preparation, and the highs and lows of crossing the Simpson Desert.

Sarah is an adventure motorcyclist, paramedic and part-time medic for The Great Australian Ride and Compass Expeditions. She has travelled by motorbike through Australia and parts of Asia, and has worked as a medic in remote Australia and Africa.

The Great Australian Ride
Prepare for a 21-day, 7500 km transcontinental off-road motorcycle adventure, Byron Bay - Steep Point.

Welcome to GAR - The Great Australian Ride. Are you ready for a true Australian Adventure? It's one hell of an exciting adventure that pushes the boundaries mentally and physically. Join a fantastic crew and ride from east to west, crossing the vast red centre while helping a great cause, Red Nose Charity. Stuart gives an in-depth view of the ride, how to prepare, how to fundraise to activate your adventure ticket, how to train for sand riding, and a discussion on bike setup.

"For some of us, when a huge reality gap opens, it actually helps us to clarify our purpose in life: we get in touch with 'the big picture', we reflect on what life is all about, we connect with our true core values, and we grow and develop. We may even discover a greater cause or create a mission, which ignites our passion and gives us a sense of vitality."

Stuart has completed eight crossings of Australia (Byron Bay - Steep Point), raising funds and awareness for Red Nose charity and other Australian charities. Founder of The Great Australian Ride, he organises a team of 16 who leave Byron Bay each year to ride 7500 km via four deserts, including the Simpson Desert, to reach Steep Point. These rides have raised over $350,000 since 2011.

Building Confidence For Solo Travel
Use short adventure rides to build confidence for solo travel overseas

Build your confidence for your overseas solo ride. Work and family issues can cause postponement of the overseas solo riding adventure that many attendees at HU events are keen to experience. You should not put off the important and necessary learning for such a ride. Planned time away from your business or negotiated time off from your employer for shorter adventure rides will help build the confidence and skills that will benefit your ventures overseas. Mal talks from personal experience in taking time off from his commitments during the last ten years to undertake adventure riding. He has covered over 200,000 km on his bikes (BMW R1150R, Suzuki DR650 and BMW R1200GS) in Australia and New Zealand, both on and off road. He'll cover: preliminary planning; time constraints – real or perceived; negotiations with your employer for time off; running your business remotely; necessary communications with employer/business/family; examples of useful communication devices; solo or group riding - advantages and disadvantages; and safety precautions for you and your equipment.

Mal's work and commitments have constrained long-term overseas riding, and yet, in the last ten years, he has covered over 200,000 km (road/off-road ) on his own bikes in Australia and New Zealand.

U.K. to Oz and Back
Iran & the 'Stans'

1. U.K. to Oz and Back
Buying motorcycles outside your home country & planning a RTW trip, from buying bikes to departure in six months

Anne and Anthony took early retirement to spend time with ageing parents and family in Europe and somehow decided to ride back on motorcycles. They bought two dealer demo F700GS motorbikes in the UK). UK-to-Oz ended up being a full round-the-world trip as the bikes could not be imported into Australia due to Australian Design rules. They travelled through Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran, the 'Stans', India, Myanmar, South East Asia, and then South, Central and North America. So 15 months, 34 countries and 52,000 km later, they were back in the UK, still needing to get home in Brisbane!

They will go through their six-month planning process (how much or how little did they plan) and the pitfalls of starting a long trip outside your home country: motorcycle equipment and riding gear, travel and motorcycle insurance, carnet, Oz design rules, and visa application variations from country to country. Being relatively novice riders, they asked the bike dealership service manager if they could shadow their mechanic when they did the pre-trip service. The relationship with the service manager proved invaluable later in the trip. They will also go through the gear they found useful along the way in terms of bike equipment, clothing, maps and electronic gear, and what didn't make their 2nd RTW. Anne and Anthony hope they can inspire others to "just do it", whatever their dream.

Anne and Anthony Speed with bikes.

2. Iran & the 'Stans'
The highlight of our first six months on the road: Iran, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

When Anne and Anthony were asked what their favourite country was on their 15-month round-the-world trip, they answered: Iran. They spent one month in Iran, the maximum time allowable on their visas, with zero time to visit the most important tourist site, Persepolis. Why not? Because people kept inviting them into their homes and asking thaty they stay for a few days. Friends of friends of friends were lined up to greet them at the next town and the same hospitality was shown. They will share the fun and amazing experiences with people, driving, social requirements, dress requirements, and hospitality. They decided embracing those experiences was more important than visiting tourist sites. Iran remains one of their favourite countries.

There are two of us. We're slow and our name is Speed - we are the 2slowspeeds! After riding small bikes in the early 1980s for two years in South Africa, we didn't get back into biking until 2009. Since then, we've done two round-the-world trips in the past three years on our two F700GSs. In our blog, in addition to sharing our personnal experiences along the way, we have documented every border crossing and visa application, plus product reviews. We are happy to answer any questions!

Mesmerising Mexico
Not what we expected

If we had to leave Australia permanently, this is our first choice after 65 countries. Mexico - what a pleasant surprise. The amazing scenery, "wow" factors on every bend, the mountain ranges (many at 3200 meters), the Topes. Mexicans are such warm and friendly people, not like the media portray them. Build the wall or don't build the wall, come and listen to our stories and decide for yourselves.

It started with "I have a plan...." Almost four years ago, we left Queensland Australia to travel the world on our Yamaha XT 660s. Since then, we have taken in many sights and over 65 countries. From Asia to Europe, British Isles to Scandinavia, Russia, The "Stans", and Mongolia to the USA. Contintuing from there through Central America to Alaska....Over 110,000 km and not an end in sight!

The Adventures of Tex & Bundy
We touch on our adventures, our charity work, a little about my 'Round Oz record and my endurance riding, AND our jet ski adventures

Come and hear the Adventures of Tex & Bundy (an Aussie bloke and submarine veteran and his Aussie stumpy-tailed cattle dog). The world's fastest and most-travelled motorcycling dog, just shy of one million km! Raising funds for much-needed local charities, Official Champions of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Ambassadors to Red Nose, Welfare Officer for Coffs Harbour Veterans Centre, and more. Hear about my successful attempt at riding 15,500 km in just under nine days for an Around Oz Record (1978). If we have time, you will hear about "Tex Does Europe!" (2017) - a 8,000 km quick squirt over a few weeks. Informative, sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious!

Each year, Tex and Bundy travel around 80,000 km for charity fundraising efforts all over Australia. Bundy is an Australian stumpy-tailed cattle dog who is just shy of one million kilometres old travelling on motorcycles.

Co-founder, expedition leader, author and veteran of the travel industry.

Two-Up on a Twin

Seventeen months, two-up around through Africa and Asia. Like so many, a long trip was the dream. After 10 years in the making, we did it. One weekend changed our lives. This is the story of Xander and Tam's 17-months-long, 26-country trip across Africa and Asia, two-up on a 2000 750cc Africa Twin. This will be a light-hearted talk about how we prepared, the decisions we made, what worked, what DIDN'T, and some fun stories from the road.

Xander has been riding since he was 5 yrs old and has never stopped for long. He started travelling on his bike as soon as he got his license at 16, travelling North America and Canada. He always travelled solo until he was 25 yrs old, when he met his wife Tam. For the last 15 years, they have been touring two-up, including in Australia, Europe, and a 17-month trip from the U.K. to Australia through Africa and SE Asia. Xander now ownes and runs Overlander Adventure Equipment in WA, a shop dedicated to overland two-wheel travel.

The Ride of Our Life
Walking a Mine Field with the Black Dog

1. The Ride of Our Life
Lessons learned, do's and don'ts, what's worked for us – what hasn't in our journey to get to the start line

New to adventure bike riding? Thinking of planning a trip around the world or even just an escape to the outback for the weekend? Then this is the talk for you! Ty and Sarah have started their RTW trip. First stop: HU Snowy. Sarah and Ty go through all the steps taken to organise this trip. They will cover what has worked and what hasn't, which companies and equipment they have used, and how they have gotten to the start line for their trip. Sarah will also be available to talk to any women interested in travelling and how she has gone about preparing for two years on the road. They'll return to HU Snowy in two years (2019!) to give a comparision talk, discussing further what did and didn't work whilst they travelled around the world. They will be honest and frank. They're always keen to discover new and better ways to do things, so feel free to say hi after the talk! Sarah and Ty will also touch on the charities that they are fundraising for whilst they travel.

2. Walking a Mine Field with the Black Dog
When a life-changing leg injury causes your whole life to stop and dealing with demons of the past.

Ty might be new to adventure riding, but that doesn't mean he hasn't had a few challenges in life. From riding his pushbike across the Simpson Desert as a 19-ear-old and fundraising for charity to the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq, and to the jungles of Asia, Ty has always sought out adventure. However, just when Ty was getting ready to exit the army to ride around the world with Sarah, he accepted the offer to do one last deployment to Iraq. Whilst in Iraq, Ty was injured and returned home to Australia. With the prospect of having his leg amputated he spent nine weeks in hospital and then five months in rehab learning to walk again. It was at this point Ty met his greatest challenge. Ty "walks" you through a brutally honest and exposing story of how he has battled PTSD, major depressive disorder, severe anxiety, a life-changing leg injury, and how he walked out the other side. Listen first hand of the simple strategies Ty shares some of the simple strategies he used successfully in his battle against the "Black Dog" and how to cope when the going gets tough and, more importantly, how to keep the dream alive of achieving your goals.

*DISCLAIMER: Ty is not a qualified mental health practioner. He is one overlander talking to other overlanders - mates helping mates. Adult language may also be used.

Travel Writing for Non-Writers
Border Crossing: A Check List
Gear Management

1. Travel Writing for Non-Writers

Most travelers hope to record their adventures in a travel blog or through travel stories. Unfortunately, many lack a clear narrative or get lost in personal detail and readers quickly lose interest. With a little forward planning and some practice anyone can write a travel story that captures the spirit of their journey and the hearts of the readers. The presentation includes just enough theory to provide context and focus attention on what makes a story work. Most of the presentation is given over to a simple "how to" guide aimed at those who are new to writing for a wide audience. Particular attention is given to avoiding common pitfalls such as over-committing and having your blog take over your journey. Attendees receive a handout with an outline of important points and a checklist to get started.

2. Border Crossing: A Check List

Jo and Mike provide a straightforward guide to assist in preparing for border crossings. It will help new riders approach their first international land border with confidence. A short formal presentation covering the listed points will be followed by a monitored discussion intended to draw on the wide experience of other travellers.

Topics include: doing the research; the paperwork; picking the border; deciding the time; fuel; gear security at the border; food and drink; the common process and the variations; currency exchange problems; finding your way around; how to use a helper; what to do about bribes; what to do when things go wrong; insurance; and getting out of the border town fast.

Jo and Mike Hannan with bike

3. Gear Management

Getting the set up and packing of a motorcycle right is vital to safety and comfort on the road. There are plenty of options for bikes and luggage, but a little forethought will keep you bike properly balanced and your gear safe. Jo and Mike provide a check list to help clarify and simplify what they call Gear Management for both ON and OFF the bike, including: GVM and what it means for your chosen bike; managing weight distribution; practical steps to improve mass centralisation; equipment problem solving; practicality; and gear security; gear organisation off the bike; emergency planning; and decoys/back-ups. Several rally bikes are used to show examples and demonstrate various options to balance the conflicting needs of volume, mass and distribution. Jo and Mike don't attempt to offer a single solution to this compromise, but provide a check list to assist riders to manage their gear so that it remains safe and secure.

Team Elephant consists of Mike and Jo Hannan and their aging BMW R1150 GSA which has covered more than 200,000 km through 46 countries over the last 10 years. They have had more than a few "border experiences" including a four-hour interrogation by Russian officials when attempting to cross into Mongolia.

Best Places to Ride in Canada
Riding Australia: a Canadian Perspective

1. Best Places to Ride in Canada

Claire gives an overview of the best roads and spectacular scenery found in National Parks in Canada. She and partner Richard Moore have been riding for the last ten years all over Canada, from the east coast to the west coast, as well as to Yukon and Alaska. They are particularly interested in visiting all national parks. Claire will speak about their experience, where are the best roads, what time of year you should visit and spectacular scenery you will find in national parks throughout Canada. They will also talk about camping and lodging facilities in Canada, comparing with the way of doing things in Australia.

2. Riding Australia: a Canadian Perspective

Claire and Richard had been riding in Australia for 3.5 months from April to mid-July 2017. They started in Melbourne (Victoria) and rode over 20,000 km visiting six states or territories, including the Northern Territory, crossing Australia from the Top End (Darwin) to the southern part and along the Great Ocean Road. They visited the major national parks and experienced the outback as well. From their Canadian perspective, Australia is very attractive, special and unique for motorcyclists. How does this compare with their previous experiences of riding, camping and visiting national parks throughout Canada and the U.S. during the previous ten years?

Claire and Richard have ridden all over Canada and the United States, from Newfoundland to Yukon, and from Alaska to California and to Louisiana. They started riding oversees in New Zealand as well as in Australia in 2017, now that they are both retired.

Curious Meandering
Impressions and experiences of 25,000 km and 7 months solo: Vladisvostok to Cape Finisterre

Axel shares his experiences of a life-time trip: 25 000 km, 22 countries, 7 months in the saddle... and a 600 km walk to top it all off! In 2016, he finally put into practice what he had gleaned from attending several HU meetings. Axel set off solo on his trusty BMW 1150GS to meander westwards. He experienced a lot, learned a lot, and had a lot of fun. He will tell you all about it, and perhaps even inspire you to do something similar. Bring all your questions.

After having attended HU events several times, Axel is a known (positive) heckler. ;-) He's been a motorcyclist for 40+ years in Oz and Europe. He can finally share his experiences with past and prospective RTW motorcycle travellers.

FAST AID for Motorcyclists
Lifesaving techniques not normally taught in other first aid courses [NOTE: This is NOT a certificate-issuing course. FYI only.]

In mid-2015, Janine created the Rider Down® program which has a core focus of reducing fatalities through the international 'Stop the Bleed' program. Over the past decade pre-hospital care has undergone a transformation toward evidence-based medicine. Advances in research have changed the way we do things including how to control major bleeding in the event of an accident. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within 3-5 minutes. Therefore, it is important to quickly stop blood loss. Rider Down® Fast Aid for Motorcyclists includes steps to control major bleeding, including the use of haemostatic dressings and commercial tourniquet application. Other skills include emergency helmet removal (when to and how to) and practical first aid kits (when size matters). Rider Down® was a finalist in the 2017 Australian Road Safety Awards.

Janine has a background as a paramedic and is an internationally certified emergency medical service (EMS) provider and educator with experience in Australia, North America and the Middle East. With a career spanning well over 25+ years, she holds numerous instructor, instructor trainer, and program development and coordinator qualifications. Janine founded one of Australia's first companies to open up formal vocational paramedic education to all individuals. Her company went on to become one of the largest private paramedic education providers in the Australia and is Western Australia's second largest private emergency ambulance service.

Packing Smarter / Fix that Flat!
Mechanical Maintenance Workshop

1. Packing Smarter

'Overweight is underprepared' has become an anthem for overlanders. However, the debate of what to bring, and how much to carry is as enduring as what is the best bike. It is agreed that the 'lighter the better', but what does that mean? What do you need to 'live on the road'? We will explore some of the advances in Camping and Motorcycle gear that is designed to be lighter and more comfortable than ever before. Be it a week end, a week or year the advances in gear may make your travels more enjoyable (or at least easier).

Xander Kabat packing workshop, Perth 2013.

Xander Kabat packing workshop

2. Fix That Flat!

In the style of Grant's tyre changing seminar, Xander covers: how to prevent flats in the first place and fix them when you get one; the best tools and how to use them for tube and tubeless tyres; hands-on practical session for beginners to experts.

Xander has been riding since he was 5 yrs old and has never stopped for long. He started travelling on his bike as soon as he got his license at 16, travelling North America and Canada. He always travelled solo until he was 25 yrs old, when he met his wife Tam. Since then, they have been travelling two-up through Australia, Europe, Africa, and SE Asia.

Also, practical how-to sessions such as roadside cooking, navigation / GPS, trip prep and planning, adventure motorcycling medicine, packing light, setting your bike up, communications / blogging from the road, self-publishing your story, yoga for bikers, bodging / bike maintenance, self-defense, photography, videography, tire repair, safe riding techniques, how to pick up your bike, off-road riding, all are of interest.

There are 45 minute and 100 minute sessions available for talks, workshops, demos and live web chats.

PLEASE NOTE:

Submitting a Presenter registration DOES NOT mean you will automatically be included in the schedule, as we can have more presenters than available presentation slots. We will confirm one way or the other as soon as we can (but not immediately!)

Join the Volunteer Crew

From welcoming travellers at the gate, to taking care of the campsite and making sure all the presentations run smoothly, the success of every HU event relies on the enthusiasm of its volunteer crew.

"What a wonderful bunch of people. I had no idea how much fun I'd have by helping out!"

"It was my absolute pleasure to be able to give something back to the HU community and working with such great folks really made the event special."

Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, get more involved with Horizons Unlimited and have loads of fun! You can sign up to volunteer when you register for the meeting, OR click here if you have already registered and want to add volunteering.

Departing or Returning?

If you're planning an expedition, why not make the Horizons Unlimited meeting your official start point? Or maybe you're nearing the completion of a journey and would like a very public welcome home? Of course you might just be passing through and fancy marking a key stage of your travels?

We'd love to make you a big part of the meeting, so feel free to get in touch and tell us your plans.

Local Hosts

For 2018, we are returning to our fantastic venue in Jindabyne, that we've christened HU Snowy Mountains. Our organising team hails from both sides of the line and even WA! Veteran travellers Brian Rix, Shirley Hardy-Rix, Pamela & Dave Hyde, Bryce Tobias and Ove Gehrmann have stepped up to the challenge, and we're VERY grateful to them all!

Brian Rix and Shirley Hardy-Rix are well used to snow!

We can always use help on the day - please volunteer to help out for a couple of hours when you register (above)!

HU Events Refund Policy

Like adventures, life can throw surprises our way. Stuff happens. While we would love for you to join the fun and connect with everyone at our events, we understand that you (and the funds) may be needed elsewhere. We'll catch up later!

On our side, we know you appreciate that we have financial commitments to venues and caterers!

The best way to let us know that you're unable to attend an event is to reply to the Registration Confirmation Email you got from us when you first signed up.

Up to 30 days prior to event start, we will refund all fees in full less a $10 (or €9 or £8) handling fee and PayPal charges. At your request, we can apply your Event Registration and all fees to any subsequent HU event you wish in that year or following year.

Up to 15 days prior to event start, we will refund only the camping/accommodation and food packages in full less a $10 (or €9 or £8) handling fee and PayPal charges. At your request, we can apply your Event Registration fee (with no handling fee) to any subsequent HU Event you wish in that year or following year. If you purchased a t-shirt, we will ship it to the mailing address you provide.

Within 15 days of the event start, there will be no refunds. At your request, we can apply your registration fee (with no handling fee) to any subsequent HU event you wish in that year or following year. If you purchased a t-shirt, we will ship it to the mailing address you provide.

If WE cancel an event:

We are constantly evaluating the situation for every event, and very much err on the side of caution. We will endeavour to announce "Final" decision one month or more before the event, but the situation COULD change closer to time, and we could be required by law to cancel.

If we are forced to cancel for COVID or natural disaster, we will roll your registration over to next year automatically.

If you want to transfer your existing registration to any other HU event in the world, just let us know.

Need a full refund? PLEASE REPLY to your original Registration Confirmation email to make it easier for us to find. If you can't find it, please email a request to: events-c (AT) horizonsunlimited(-)com with the subject line: "Refund event-name event-year"

New to Horizons Unlimited?

Horizons Unlimited was founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson following their journey around the world on a BMW R80 G/S motorcycle. The website, HUBB forum and regular events across the globe have inspired thousands of people to follow their dreams and take the road less travelled.

Membership - Show you're proud to be a Horizons Unlimited Traveller!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love overland adventure travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events such as this one (18 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.

You can join at a reduced rate as part of your meeting registration. Note that new Memberships with your Meeting Registration are applied as of the Meeting date or as soon as possible thereafter, not earlier, unless you make a special request in the Comments box when you register.
