Workshops and Tech Sessions belowPetra and Anders StridfeldtIs it hard to ride around the world...nah! |
One day we became bored and within five months we had sold our house and furniture, left our jobs and started a trip around the world.
After a wonderful big send off at the HUBB UK event 2013 we started our around the world trip rather unprepared. We have so far been on the roads for 16 months and covered 22 countries such as Russia, Mongolia, Myanmar, India, Alaska etc., and are now heading towards Mexico and the whole way down to Ushuaia in Argentina. After we have done this we have 'only' Africa to cross until we are back in the UK or Sweden. We are the 'living' proof that you actually can ride in countries such as Mongolia without any off road experience whatsoever, though it might be tough.
Swedish born Petra and Anders Stridfeldt lived in the UK for ten years before starting their around the world trip on two BMW F800GS.
Ramey 'Coach' StroudAround the World on 3-Wheels |
Paralyzed from the chest down after a racing accident, Ramey 'Coach' Stroud would never ride again. Or so they thought...
It took a year just to move a toe. Another year of hard work to stand-up. A third to crawl up on a sidecar outfit from his wheelchair. By then nothing could hold him back from his goal: Ride Around the World!
Now he has ridden through 44 different countries on mostly dirt roads that have sometimes have left him stranded and alone in tough conditions.
How does a guy who walks with a cane and rides alone handle border crossings, bandits, and bad situations? It might cost you a cold beer to find out.
Racing Champion, professional motorcycle instructor, athlete, author and keynote speaker. Ramey 'Coach' Stroud has brought home the gold on super-bikes, in motocross, desert racing, enduros, on the drag strip, extreme trials and international rally. When his racing career ended with a spinal cord injury he crawled up on a sidecar outfit and rode around the world.
Carla King and Jonathan EhlyRiding to Central Baja's Undiscovered Treasures |
We like to describe central Baja as a combination of the Galapagos Islands and Namibia that's only a day and a half's ride from San Diego. Its natural beauty and the opportunities for exploration by land, sea and air are endless. Baja has always been friendly to tourists and expats, and tourists flock to the northern and southern ends of the peninsula. But it's the central area between the Sea of Cortez and Scorpion Bay on the Pacific that calls to us, as it retains the original feel of old Baja.
Ride your dirt bike, your adventure bike, heck, even your Harley. There's no wrong way to explore Baja. Lately we've been trailering our KTM dirt bikes along with inflatable paddleboard-kayaks and camping gear to keep our options open.
We look forward to showing you a lesser-known network of dirt and tarmac through landscapes that range from the rugged and pine-scented Sierra San Pedro Martir Mountains to desert ranchitas to glittering seas. We'll explore seaside wonders like Bahia de Los Angeles with its hundreds of thousands of dolphins frolicking in the sparkling blue waters among stark islands rising from the Sea of Cortez and Scammons Lagoon on the Pacific Coast for spectacular whale watching.
Travel with us through the Catavina Desert with its thick-trunked elephant trees and Boojum forests, a surreal landscape borrowed by Dr. Suess to illustrate his children's books. Further south we bump along arroyos and oasis to the 7000-year old San Borjitas cave paintings. These are just a few of the opportunities we'll show you to inspire a plan for your ride to Baja's undiscovered treasures.
Carla King is an adventure travel author who has specialized in solo explorations of the world on a series of cranky indigenous motorcycles. Jonathan Ehly is also a world traveler and he has been exploring Baja for over 30 years by motorcycle, 4x4, boat and small aircraft to seek out hidden trails, remote valleys and secluded bays. We've spent the last year exploring Baja together, and have chosen Mulegé and Bahia Concepcion as our base for continued explorations.

Jeremy Kroeker, CanadaThrough Dust and Darkness - KLR through Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. |
Jeremy Kroeker is a Mennonite with a motorcycle. When his seemingly unflinching faith in a Christian worldview begins to shift, Kroeker hops on his bike to seek answers from another perspective. After shipping his ride to Europe, Kroeker discovers that the machine wobbles back and forth worse than his own opinions about spirituality. Still, he carries on, oscillating through Europe—Germany, Austria, Croatia, Albania—and into the Middle East - Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and, ultimately, Iran.
Jeremy Kroeker is the award-winning author of two books, "Motorcycle Therapy" and "Through Dust and Darkness." With his motorcycle, he has traveled to nearly 30 countries while managing to do at least one outrageously stupid thing in every one. He has evaded police in Egypt, tasted teargas in Israel, scrambled through minefields in Bosnia and Lebanon, and wrangled a venomous snake in Austria. One time he got a sliver in El Salvador.
Steven Kirk, Perth to PerthThis trip started in Perth Scotland through 19 countries and 28,600 km across Europe, Asia and into Australia, finishing in Perth WA. |
"I'm now at an age where I don't care too much about work as its only there to pay for my adventures and beer... or preferably wine. It was on such a wine tasting excursion to my fridge one night that got to thinking about such things as... how difficult was it for the pioneers who first came to Australia. How hard would it be to go overland and other such nonsense. My third glass of Sauvignon blanc produced a great idea. Why not take a trip from Perth to Perth on a Triumph Tiger of course.
Then I woke up next day and realised it was a plan and everyone knew..."

Nicole Espinosa, Rugged RiderThe Ultimate Backyard Adventure |
Constraints keeping you from launching out on your RTW? No worries, you can have the ultimate adventure right here in our own backyard.
Longing to do that RTW that you've always dreamt about? Is time, commitments, funds, and even kids keeping you from being able to wander too far from home base? Not to worry, my friends, because I too share the same parameters... for now. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful country with completely diverse landscape just a stone's throw, or day ride away.
I'll share three gorgeous loops around Oregon and the west coast, Arizona and the Grand Canyon via Sedona, and the four corner Southwestern states. All of these journeys boast some of the best riding and scenery in the nation. Also, come find out some great tips on researching neat local treasures, or flying by the seat of your pants with no plans and maintaining an open road mind. And, don't forget about adventure mods and gear that'll make solo riding a breeze.
Nicole's adventurous spirit was ignited at a young age through backpacking the length of the Sierras as a teenager. Freedom was the word of the decade of her twenties as it became obvious that she had to learn how to ride a motorcycle to get to work when her Alfa Romeo spider kept breaking down. Married in her thirties, she then took a short sabbatical from riding to raise kids until they were old enough to understand that mommy loves life and has to live it! After starting her own aftermarket accessories business Rugged Rider, she launched out on solo rides to explore both our North American backyard and her soul the past six years. Nicole now juggles the managing editor position at Adventure Motorcycle magazine, her business Rugged Rider, a monthly column at Midwest Motorcyclist, and co-coordinates Horizons Unlimited California.
Flip Morton and Nicole EspinosaWorking on the road. Perfect spot for a conference call. |
Now, to make this a lifestyle for those who are just beginning to make the road their way of life or those who have been doing it for years. Flip and Nicole will explore this topic with a little help from their friends!

Sandy, Terry and Jack Borden, Adventure TrioMaking the Choice to Flee |
We are a motorcycling family of 3 on 2 BMW motorcycles. We've been riding as a family since our son, Jack, was 5 years old. Now, 7 years later, we've made the decision to sell the house, flee the usual, and head to South America.
This was a choice we made as a family, knowing that if we didn't do it now, then when? Some changes have been easier than expected, some a bit more of a challenge. At the end of the day, we can look at each other and know that we made the right decision. It's time for us to write our next chapter while showing Jack the world beyond the usual.
Grant and Susan Johnson, Horizons UnlimitedHow it all began. The story of Grant and Susan's 11-year trip around the world, without a plan or a clue! |
Way back in 1987, before the Internet, two young and naive Canadians set out from Vancouver to ride around the world on a motorcycle. The plan (and budget) was for 3 years, but it didn't quite work out that way!
11+ years later, they finally made it, through 50 countries - Europe, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, North and South America, with a side trip to Antarctica! Hundreds of great pics and some amazing stories!
Robert ThodeCuba: The Forbidden Island |
Citizens of the USA have, and are, restricted in their travel to Cuba. To travel, (legally), in Cuba US citizens must be part of a “people to People” tour. Moto Discovery is the only motorcycle tour company currently licensed to provide motorcycle tours to Cuba. This was not my normal method of travel, but I was not disappointed, Cuba is a fascinating place, a beautiful land full of warm and friendly people.
We all look at things a little differently as we travel. I tend to look at the economic and political systems as well as natural resources industries. My preconceived opinions about the socialist economic system being a failure were confirmed but I found some things worked very well, health care, education, racial integration and a sense of community were impressive.
The people of Cuba were wonderful and the best way to travel Cuba is on a Harley. Political and economic structure is changing rapidly, some will be for the better, some maybe not.
Robert: "I have been traveling the world on the 'installment plan' for several years. Have covered the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, South and eastern Africa. This last winter we rode Cuba."
Workshops and Tech Sessions
Because Horizons Unlimited events are about informing, not just inspiring, we also have a great lineup of educational sessions for you...
Mark & Lori CiszekGetting started on a 2up RTW - The false starts and pitfalls of getting going. |
After years of short moto-holidays, this year we quit our jobs, sold everything we own and set out on a long distance motorcycle adventure in May. So far we have travelled almost 30,000 km in North America from Ontario to Alaska via Newfoundland. We are currently making our way south to Mexico and beyond.
Join us for an inside look at how we got from the North American "dream" of work-eat-sleep, to the life of perpetual travel. How did we downsize to one packed motorcycle and a few totes of belongings? What did we do with the rest? What did we decide to change in less than an hour of starting out? What are some of the joys and downfalls of riding 2up on a long trip?
David and Heidi WintersWe're Sleeping Where?? and Travel Light - Travel Happy |
We're Sleeping Where?? - RTW Couch Surfing, Wild Camping, Sleeping in Lobbies and with Complete Strangers.
During our trip, we wild camped along the coast of Turkey, in abandoned campgrounds in the Czech Republic and on the streets of Israel. We have stayed with complete strangers, from Nepal to Hungary, and everywhere in-between. I have even slept on the top of a zamboni storage shed in Canada...
Some of these moments have become the highlights of our trip! This is the vulnerability that you must, and will have during your adventures. It's what makes you approachable. It's what will, in the end, make your trip.
You will need to sleep somewhere, so make the most of it and learn how to accept hospitality and how to give friendliness. We have both received and given hospitality to travelers.
Let us show you how to loosen up and turn your paranoia into something productive.
Travel Light - Travel Happy
Learn the art of packing light and multi-purposing your gear. Traveling is about freedom, not lugging around a ball and chain of gear.
In 2012, my wife and I wrapped up our RTW motorcycle trip. We rode two-up on a KTM 640 Adv. These are not big bikes, so we had to be very mindful of what we were bringing.
I will explain how to choose your luggage, clothing, camping and kitchen gear for light weight travel. I will also explain how to multi-purpose your gear, sleep in freezing temps with a lightweight sleeping bag, wash your clothes with solar power, keep your luggage containers organized and much more.
Bringing the wrong gear will stress you our and stress-fracture your subframe, so choose wisely.
David: Like many, I am addicted to travel. Motorcycles, backpacks and Westfalia Campers are all a means to an end. In 2012, my wife and I finished our RTW trip on our trusty KTM 640 Adv - two up.

The Scary parts of Take Off & Landing
Planning to roam the globe is exciting & scary at the same time. You'll have the time of your life, but what can you expect when you return? What is the scariest and most dangerous part of flying? It's the take-off and landing; and oddly enough launching into a long term journey can have many similarities. Planning to leave your 'normal' life behind to roam the globe can be both exceptionally exciting and scary at the same time. While you're off adventuring you'll have the time of your life, but what can you expect when you return home? Having spent 14 months traveling/living on their motorcycles, Gaila Gutierrez and Tad Haas have learned a thing or two during their transcontinental travel. They will share tips on trip and bike preparation, planning, budget, volunteering and how having 'no reservations' really panned out. Learn what they will do differently next time and how 411 days of togetherness challenged their relationship. And most importantly they give you a glimpse into what every traveler should know about re-entry and landing.
Tad and Gaila currently reside in the Seattle area and are in the planning stages of their next big adventure.

Erik Stephens, Twisted ThrottleTrailside breakdowns & fixes, Electrical accessory wiring 101, Auxiliary headlights for motorcycles and Adventure motorcycle bike prep and ergos |
Erik Stephens is the Founder of Twisted Throttle, a Rhode Island manufacturer and distributor of adventure riding gear. His "gear testing" trips include off-pavement motorcycle travel on 6 continents. Twisted Throttle's factory store is an adventure riding destination, including an on-site learning center, prototyping lab, retail store, cafe', and campground.
Trailside motorcycle breakdowns & fixes - the knowledge and the tools to fix your bike when it breaks on the road
When traveling long distances via motorcycle, your bike sometimes breaks. When that distance is backcountry and off-pavement, those breakdowns become more frequent and carry higher consequences.
This isn't just a tool kit ingredients seminar! We'll identify the typical mechanical breakdowns dualsport riders often encounter and their causes. We'll have a little slideshow showing examples of trailside breakdowns and creative temporary fixes that got the rider back to town. After we've explained how to use all these tools and supplies, we'll show samples of shop tools and trail tools, and show how the size, functionality, and packability of both differ. We'll hand out a suggested tool packing list.
Electrical accessory wiring 101 - how to add electronics to your bike without setting it on fire
It all started innocently enough. You bought a battery charger and attached the hookup wire to your battery terminals. Then came the heated grips. Then the GPS, the horn, the auxiliary lights, the heated clothing, and the 12-volt blender. Now you're popping fuses all the time and only half the gadgets work. We'll get you fixed up!
We'll cover definitions of volts, watts and amps, how to choose the right fuse, route wires properly, advantages/disadvantages of various wire connectors ranging from Posi-taps to soldering, and how to tidy it all up with a power distribution block. We'll also cover how to safely add accessories to the dreaded CANBUS system on BMW motorcycles. A tool and supply list will be provided.
Auxiliary headlights for motorcycles - how to choose, install and use the lights that best fit your needs.
Ever wondered how to make your motorcycle more visible to drivers during the day or see to the furthest reaches of the horizon when riding at night?
Armed with a top box full of LED driving lights, we'll share info on how to pick the best lighting solution for your use and budget, whether you want to be more visible to oncoming Mac trucks or see Bambi from half a mile away.
For you optical engineers out there, our hit list includes:
* Differences between halogen, HID, and LED technologies
* Legal considerations (i.e., how to not get a ticket)
* Why light color and power consumption matters
* How to compare one brand of lighting to another without getting lost in jargon and marketspeak
* Wiring on pesky CANBUS BMW motorcycles
* Picking easy-to-install mounting hardware
Most importantly, he'll be bringing lots of LED lights to point at the wall and make shadow puppets with.
Adventure motorcycle bike prep and ergos - Learn to effectively pack and armor your motorcycle and adjust its ergonomics to suit your size and riding style
While there are many accessories you can buy for a motorcycle, there's often little talk about how to minimize spending, minimize weight, and adjust the bike's original controls to get the job done without turning your motorcycle into something that looks like a post apocalyptic attack robot with huge swaths of armor plating.
This talk will cover the pros and cons of various hard and soft luggage systems, how to carry the weight safely, and what to leave behind. Common sources of trip-stopping bike damage will be covered, as well as the essential protection bits that can prevent the problem in the first place. Basics of proper riding position for street and dirt riding will be covered, as well as the benefits of adjusting original hand levers, handlebars, and footpegs and levers to match your riding style.
Emphasis will be on minimizing adding weight and expense to your motorcycle while providing enough protection and storage to get you where you need to go.
Carla OlivaSelf-Care On The Road - Self-care techniques to make your trip more enjoyable! |

Ramey 'Coach' StroudDancing With Your Bike |
Why Dancing And Riding? Ever watch dancers in a salsa or tango club? Some are very good together and are really fun to watch. But some seem to be off-beat, disconnected and in separate worlds even though they move to the same music. They know it and everyone in the club does too. The difference between good and not-so-good dance partners is how they connect. It's that light touch, unseen sensations and soft connection that allows dancers to be great together. It's exactly the same with you and your bike.
It's Not About Muscle. Your motorcycle has all the power it needs. It is a wonderfully designed machine that can do amazing things - if you let it. Dancing With Your Bike means to invite smooth, precise movement with little effort. The payoff? You are not so tired at the end of a long ride.
Two-Way Communication. Knowing what's going on with your motorcycle is not just what you see or think. Like dancers we get important information from finger tips and muscle tension. Understanding light sensations from butt, boots and bars allows us to respond faster. Pressure on fingertips and palms say much about body position for acceleration, braking or turning. Feeling the bike tip, roll or slide speaks loudly about surface, terrain and control function.
Come to this session to learn how to connect with your motorcycle in ways you never thought possible.
Jimmy LewisEssential Motorcycle Skills - An on-bike demonstration showing how basic skills lead to high-level safe riding. |
Jimmy Lewis shows how the basic motorcycle skills build to make you a safer and more proficient rider. His on-bike demonstration is an interactive experience showing you some simple drills to practice that will elevate your riding experience. From often overlooked instinctive reactions like balance and vision to the simple use of the throttle, brakes and clutch, his techniques change the way you think about riding in challenging situations.
Jimmy Lewis is a former professional motorcycle racer who has taken world-wide off-road racing experience and turned it into practical lessons on how to ride and control your motorcycle. His experience of taking out of control situations and putting them in a controlled environment and showing how to practice perfect will help riders of any skill level.
From stage wins and a podium finish in the Dakar Rally to an overall win in the Baja 1000 and Gold Medals in ISDE competition, going fast was only one aspect of Jimmy's racing. Riding many different kinds of bikes in all kinds of conditions built a solid foundation for developing a training curriculum any rider can learn from.
Robert ThodeMy Friend The VOM - Basic Electical Systems |
Basics of electrical systems and use of the volt ohm meter to do simple trouble shooting. This is not intended for the experienced technician but the rider who might find themselves in the mountains of Peru with an electrical problem, (happened to me).
There are only four possible failures in any electoral system. Understanding these failures and how to use a VOM to identify them will let you solve many common problems.
If you have a VOM in your tool pack bring it along and we will do a little hands on.

Bring It Home! Art of Everyday Adventure
How do our grand travels teach us to craft our outer map and inner compass for the adventure called Life? HU offers so many great tools and inspirations for grand travels. But what's an Adventurista to do between? Adventuring enriches my life, not only while I'm far from home. It enriches who I am every day – at work, with my family, in my community. Let's share the adventuring tools and inspirations, stories and pictures, that we find uplifting when the Traveler returns!
One of my favorite phrases is "resilience trumps protection." Courage and confidence really come down to where you place your trust when the rubber meets the road. Sure, mitigate the risks you can. But in the end, trust in your ability to rise to a challenge, innovate, and bounce back. Learn, grow, evolve. The only thing that prepares you for a journey – is the journey! Ain't that just like Life?!?
Meditation that Doesn't Suck
Meditation has many benefits – health, being fully present, creativity, undistractable attention – but one size doesn't fit all!
We all choose our ride and love our steed – because it's perfect for us. Other than playful brand-snobbery, we know every rider will find their perfect bike, and we celebrate that it's perfect for them.
Meditation has as many styles of "ride" as there are types of bike, with as many customizations and farkles, too. Take this time to test-ride some different models and actually experience what fits for you. Or what fits you in different times and situations: visualization, focus meditation, sound, contemplation, insight meditation, movement… we'll do a couple minutes of each.
Karen Fritz, author of The Art of Adventure, lives in Colorado with her two teen sons, Porsche, Tiger 800, and yarn stash. She loves twisty canyons and the quiet-in-the-helmet of touring back roads across the west with the smell of sundrenched sage for company, renewing the spirit through the inner adventure.
Bill EllisonMotorcycle Recovery Systems - Demonstration and hands-on presentation of setting up simple to complex rope systems to get your bike back up on the road. |
What if you have the misfortune of having your bike end up at the bottom of a ditch, 20 ft. off the road? How are you going to get it back up on the road and on your way again? This presentation will give you some techniques on how you can recover your bike.
Beginning with basic equipment, we will demonstrate different rope systems following the KISS Principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid!). The smaller the number of riders in your party, the more you may need to think about carrying some specialized equipment to enable you to set up mechanical advantage systems to double and triple your pulling power.
Bill Ellison is a retired firefighter/paramedic and a technical rescue instructor. Both he and his wife have BMW GS's and enjoy exploring the back roads of the western U.S. Bill has over 30 years of experience teaching rope rescue systems and will demonstrate methods and techniques that can be remembered and used by anyone.

Craig Vetter50 Years of Motorcycle Design - The fun projects I have been involved with |
In 1965 Craig graduated with a degree in Industrial Designer from the University of Illinois. Vetter never took a normal job. He simply designed the things that he wanted, made them and sold them. His work in life has always been "design driven" as opposed to "financially driven" or "marketing driven".
It turns out that the things Craig wanted, others wanted, too. His Windjammer fairing and saddlebags of the 70s created the modern touring motorcycle. By 1977, Vetter had factories in Illinois and California, employing over five hundred people, and had grown to be second in size to Harley-Davidson. Vetter has been awarded over twenty US patents and /or trademarks.
Craig's "Vetter Rocket 3" design of 1969 became the Triumph Hurricane of 1973 and was selected for display in the Guggenheim Museum's "Art of the Motorcycle". Bike Magazine named the Hurricane as one of the "100 best motorcycle designs ever". Other Vetter motorcycle designs include the Bonneville TT, Terraplane sidecar and the Mystery Ship. Vetter scooter designs include the Defiant and Torpedo and a series of Streamliners.
Today, every motorcycle manufacturer features at least one machine in its lineup that is substantially derived from Craig's inventions.
Motorcycle Streamlining - How to ride better and get 100 mpg
In 1980, in an effort to learn what the upper limits of efficient transportation might be at real highway speeds, Craig hosted the international "Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Runs" in California. Driving a course from San Luis Obispo through Big Sur to Monterey, the winning mileage went from 98 mpg in 1980 to 470 mpg in 1985.
One of the winning Vetter machines is on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
Currently, Craig is designing and developing true streamlining for high mileage, street legal vehicles in an attempt to help to reduce our consumption of energy. In addition, he hosts a series of Vetter Fuel Economy Challenges.
In 1999, the American Motorcyclist Association inducted Craig into the "Motorcycle Hall of Fame. " Today, the Museum features a permanent display of his work.

Richard Battles, RKA LuggageCommunications and soft luggage |
The Evolution of Evolution
Communications, are you "IN-Charge"? The evolution of evolution, communications, what we expected in the beginning, and expect now from the hi-tech world & what we are getting.
Richard will discuss two wheel communications including Bike to Bike, driver to passenger, Bluetooth profiles, FRS, CB radios. Navigation audio, Music, Cell phone usage, how to charge devices. Portable battery technology and more...
Anything and everything you want and can do on a motorcycle to communicate with "it", your partners and the outside world. The "IN-Charge" statement is referring to RKA's IN-Charge communications Tankbags that we design and manufacture. Understanding that not everyone wants a "Communications" tankbag this presentation will cover ALL aspects of positioning, carrying, and using communications devices.
Motorcycle soft luggage applications
RKA has been manufacturing Motorcycle luggage 29 years now and is mostly "On Road" orientated but Richard still has a lot to talk about.
Most of our users are on road touring folks so our saddlebags do not conform well to off road or dual sport motorcycles with high pipes, but our tankbags, Seatbags, and Rackbags DO work just fine!
Richard will discuss attachments, positioning, packing, and bungee cords, among other things.
Richard and Kathy Battles started RKA Motorcycle Luggage in 1985. Every textile product that leaves our building is designed and manufacture there, we make these products. MADE IN THE USA. RKA is now also offering other products including communications products.
Wynne Benti, True Grit GSSelf Rescue Miles from Nowhere |
Self Rescue Miles from Nowhere
We often talk about what we'd do if we happened upon the scene of a wreck involving another motorcyclist. But what if that motorcyclist is you and you are riding alone out in the middle of nowhere? After a three day 1600 mile solo ride around Northern California, and only 28 miles from home, something terrible happened, but to this day, no one knows what. For hours Wynne laid out on the ground before someone found her. This is the story of that ride home.
Single, over 55 and riding alone: using common sense and technology to make your solo long distance ride safer
Do people really know before participating in an inherently risky activity what the full risks are? Are those scrapes and dents on your bike there because the motorcycle malfunctioned, or more likely because of decisions you made-assessing a risk-then doing it anyway.
If it were not for our dreams, love of riding, plain naiveté or denial of risk-gut fear, our ancestor's genetic gift of self-protection developed over thousands of years, would keep most of us home.
What influences us to make the decisions we do about where we ride? How do external environmental factors play a part in our decision-making process and our ability to assess personal risk-from selecting the motorcycle we ride on a particular trip to taking that ride on an unknown dirt road? Where's the best place to keep your SPOT or cell phone?
Twenty-five years ago, Wynne was chairperson of a large non-profit's first national committee on creating a domestic insurance policy that would help protect it from lawsuits directly related to the outdoor activities it promoted. What they discovered was that though people 'knew' an activity was dangerous, they did it anyway, then f they were hurt, sued the provider of services. It was the dawn of personal injury lawsuits, liability waivers and disclaimers.
Pete NesbittBe prepared! |
I prepared or should I say over-prepared down to infinite detail, best laid plans and all that!! It was very apparent to me really quickly that not all big adventurers are that well prepared and others are left totally dependent on good fortune or maybe the help of others. So many what if's can blow all that.
I did a big trip up into Canada, then a trip to Texas and thought I was ready to do a RTW, man did I still have a lot to learn. I am really good mechanically, ok on electrics and great with people but my learning curve was huge when the planning and actual trip began.
A big part of my story is how a group of 7 turns into a group of 1 in 3 days, this might happen to you too so maybe you can learn from some of my experiences.
We had a plan that lasted only a few days and I was all alone in Siberia when I had promised my wife that we had this fantastic group effort all arranged, safety, medical issues etc. no problem. I am resourceful but when I finally had to tell Mrs Nesbitt that I was alone I knew the outcome.
I am almost 63 years young, fit and active and very adventurous. I have traveled extensively in the US and Canada and did a RTW trip 2010, starting with a group of 7 and shortly finding myself alone in Siberia. The story gets better from there... I have a strong leaning toward helping newbies plan and get started on their travels.

Jeremy Kroeker is the author of two books, "Motorcycle Therapy" and "Through Dust and Darkness." With his motorcycle, he has traveled to nearly 30 countries while managing to do at least one outrageously stupid thing in every one. He has evaded police in Egypt, tasted teargas in Israel, scrambled through minefields in Bosnia and Lebanon, and wrangled a venomous snake in Austria. One time he got a sliver in El Salvador.
Danell Lynn, Author of "Philanthropic Wanderlust", will be taking the young readers edition to schools and groups of children throughout a year long adventure, helping to inspire youth for adventure and philanthropy!
Carla King will bring her books - get her to sign your copy!
Ted Simon will have his books, especially the famous "Jupiters Travels" - get a new signed copy from him! He's happy to sign your old copy, but a new one does him more good. ;)

Note: If you are camping on Wednesday night, cost is $20.
No Fires
There's a strict 'no fires' policy across the whole site, but camping stoves and BBQs are allowed.
