Ed Haywood (mundo bravo)Driven - Solo to the Arctic Circle |
Following his ride to the Darien Gap, Ed is back to share some of his adventures on a solo ride to the Arctic Circle on a BMW RT 1100. Ed has also acquired a Ural rig and plans a ride on that this spring, so stay tuned...
Ed Haywood is a rider and video producer in it for the long haul.
Horizons Unlimited Colorado Ride-outs
Dave Rankine has volunteered to lead a ride over some of the easier Colorado passes for people who want to do some guided off pavement group experience. Off road technique instruction as needed. Ride is weather permitting.
Note: You are spoiled for choice on rides in the area, so let Greg know if you have any particular requests.
Facilities for a Fantastic Three Days
The Horizons Unlimited Colorado Campfire and Ride meeting will be held at Terry A Gross memorial park (Geneva Creek), Pike National Forest, Grant, CO 80448.
This secluded park features streams on both sides of the property to form an island. An approximately 400 ft. x 150 ft pond is ideal for canoeing and fishing...
The park is secluded from the paved road and neighbors, ideal for friendly motorcyclists ;-)
The park also features 4 horse shoe pits, a bandstand 24ft. x 20ft. a 30ft gazebo with a firepit, 2 very nice & clean restroom facilities are available, two walk bridges over Geneva Creek.
Camping
Camping along the creek is included in your registration fee.
Food
You won't go hungry! From their website: "We smoke like a narrow gauge engine from Colorado! But our 'engine' belches the primal scent of bar-b-qued meats. Succulent Ribs - Brisket - Pork & Turkey legs."
And a local delicacy - Fudge!
Menu from their website:
There is also a small "camper store" on site, for firewood, soups and soda.

I would pick your medium sized bike the KTM
Gary:
Good question. Riding routes are up to you, and your skill level. Pull out your Colorado Atlas & Gazetteer, find Grant, and look at your options north, west and south.
For the "tough" or "rough" stuff, I'd not want either of your options over Red Cone, and depending on how chewed up the track, maybe not even Webster.
Boreas Pass, although gravel, was a train track - so buses and Harley's "adventure" over it. Same degree of difficulty with Guannella Pass, which is now paved.
That said, I've seen talented riders take 1,000 cc BMWs over Red Cone (less talented like myself used a R80G/S) and an R75/5, with saddlenags, over Mosquito Pass.
On Friday evening David Rankine will be discussing options for Saturday Day Rides "around the campfire," likely the best time for you to option your Saturday rides with whatever motorcycle you bring.
In closing, I'd sumit as one of my gifted colleagues once opined, "Adventure riding is like sex, it all takes place between your ears."
Regards,
Dr. Gregory Frazier, Chief, World Adventure Affairs Desk, CITY BIKE Magazine
Gary: We pass out a map and encourage people to ride in groups of folks with equal ability. Last year the map showed Boreal Pass for novices, Weston for intermediate riders, and Mosquito for experts. Mostly people went over Boreal. That is the pass in the Video. We don't have a guided run if that was your question. Dave Rankine
What type of riding will it be at this event? I have a Triumph Tiger 800XC if it's Adventure riding, a KTM 690 Enduro R for rougher stuff or a KTM 300 XC-W for single-track. I'd like to know which to bring.
Thanks,
Gary
