Inspiring, Informing & Connecting
Some people value Horizons Unlimited events for what they learn from the unique line-up of presenters. Some people value the chance to discover new products and services at the trade stands. Some people value just kicking back with a beer among old friends and new.
Most people enjoy a little bit of everything, and everyone goes home fired-up for adventure with a smile on their face.
The event will include a packed schedule of presentations and activities. All within the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that Horizons Unlimited is known for.
Horizons Unlimited Queensland Event Schedule
The event is taking place from Friday, May 2 to Monday, May 5, 2025.
On-site registration/check-in will open on Friday, at 12:00 noon. Do not arrive before Friday unless you are a volunteer who has been cleared to do so. We can not accommodate early arrivals, so please plan accordingly. Also we must be off the grounds by NOON Monday as there are other groups coming in.
There will be slide shows and tech clinics on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Come early and make it a great weekend!
As well as hearing inspiring stories of overlanding adventure from around the world, you'll get the low-down on preparing for your journey, navigation, first-aid, photography, filming and a host of other essential topics. Whatever your past experience or future plans may be, there's something for everyone.
The draft schedule will be available approx 1 week before the event. PLEASE NOTE: The schedule is subject to change at any time - all the presenters are volunteers and travelling, thus they may be delayed or unable to get there. Some may have anxiety attacks and be unable to perform! ;) And sometimes travellers show up unexpectedly with great pics and stories, so we try to fit them in! Details of changes to presentation times or other matters of note will be posted at Registration and other locations.

Heather EllisAfrica to the Silk Road / |
HEATHER ELLIS is an Australian motorcycle adventurer, author and speaker who rode solo across Africa and Central Asia along the Silk Roads to China on her Yamaha TT600. She is the author of two bestselling books, Ubuntu: One Woman's Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa and Timeless On The Silk Road: An Odyssey From London to Hanoi.
1. Africa to the Silk Road
The power of the journey: from Africa to Central Asia by motorcycle
Australian motorcycle adventurer, writer, and author, Heather Ellis travelled across Africa, Europe, and central Asia on her Yamaha TT600 from 1994 to 1997. After Africa, Heather worked as a London motorcycle courier, then packed her TT600 to ride the ancient Silk Roads of Central Asia. Heather Ellis is the author of Ubuntu: One Woman's Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa and Timeless On The Silk Road. Both books have received praise from Joanna Lumley, Cheryl Strayed, Tony Wheeler, Ted Simon and many others. In this presentation, illustrated with inspiring images from her travels, Heather will outline her own unique journey and discuss how to discover and hold on to the 'power of the journey' especially in this all consuming age of social media. Heather's next adventure on her Yamaha TT600 will be South to North America.
2. Travel Writing Workshop
Learn what it takes to write your motorcycle travel memoir and get it published.
Heather Ellis is the author of Ubuntu: One Woman's Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa (Black Inc. 2015) and Timeless On The Silk Road (Phonte 2019). Both books are highly rated on Amazon and elsewhere online and have received praise from Joanna Lumley, Cheryl Strayed, Tony Wheeler, Ted Simon, and many others. Writing a best-selling, even readable, travel memoir starts when you're on the road. But it's much more than a 'blow-by-blow' account of what you did. In this travel writing workshop, learn the key steps to writing a book and magazine features. Heather's first book Ubuntu was traditionally published, but she self-published her second book Timeless On The Silk Road. Heather also shares her book sales data, which will surprise you! And, most importantly, you will learn how not to bore your reader because your story has lost that sense of expectation of what comes next.
Linda Bootherstone-BickSixty Years of Motorcycling and Music Around the World |
In her 60+ years of motorcycling around the world, Linda saw how adventure travel has changed since the 1960s. Back then, motorcycles were common for daily transport in many countries, bike mechanics were simpler, and motorcycle clubs were a fascinating mix of all kinds of riders.
While bikes are more reliable and sophisticated (and bigger, heavier!) today, they're also almost impossible to fix yourself without specialized equipment. In short, while there's more variety in bikes and gear now, there's so much specialization. Still, these changes have influenced how and where many women adventure riders have explored and influenced the experiences they gained.
Linda touches on motorcycling and making music around the world over sixty years. Singing and playing a musical instrument always leads to new friends. She's still very much into shorter trips where she can rent or buy a small bike for the time she's in a country.
LINDA BOOTHERSTONE-BICK is a British-Australian author and motorcyclist who rode solo across Africa in 1974. She's travelled through North America, Europe, northern Africa, and, in 2005-2007, from Germany to Indonesia.
Kathleen PerryRiding Solo Around the World: Part 1 |
KATHLEEN PERRY is circumnavigating the world, riding solo on "007" non-stop Alaska to New Zealand.
1. Riding Solo Around the World: Part 1
Alaska to New Zealand riding non-stop - 62 countries over 105,000 km.
Not on my bucket list it just happened. Circumnavigating the World on "007". Hitting on 57-years-old when my journey began. Flying from New Zealand to Alaska on the 1st May 2023. The goal was to ride around the world non-stop with another girl.... Hitting the points of Prudhoe Bay top of Alaska, North America down to the most southern tip of South America Ushuaia. Riding to Nordkapp the top of Norway, Europe, then home to New Zealand. My journey became a solo ride after three short months and the fun began from August 2023 Mexico. Currently, January 2025, riding a small corner of Australia before heading home to NZ late February to ride the length of the The Long White Cloud. This will be the end of this journey riding a Triumph Tiger Rally Pro 900 - Officially the lowest one in the world. Fondly named "007". A journey including a major crash, a few other spills, thrills, and challenges on my way.
2. Riding Solo Around the World: Part 2
Alaska to New Zealand - non-stop, solo most of the way.
Riding around the world from Alaska to New Zealand. The journey has taken me through 62 countries, over 105,000 km. Preparation before the ride started. Challenges of riding solo with a big bike. Border crossings, visas, and the paperwork. The gear I chose and how it has performed. The beauty of meeting others, the solitude, navigation, camping, weather.... Where I chose to ride and why.
Chris and Dale Bartlett, African OdysseyHow Often Are You Asked: Is It Safe? |
We're so glad you're safe and sound back home. (Well, no thanks!)
Let's stay in and organise the sock drawer. (... said no overland motorcyclist ever!)
Why ride a Moto Guzzi through Africa? Especially, a Quota? Firstly, it was the most bike (by kilo) that we could buy for the least dollars. Secondly, it is agricultural in its technology; little has changed in 50 years. And lastly, an esteemed motorcycle engineer friend supposed it to be possibly the worst bike to choose for a trans-African trip ... it seemed to tick all boxes. Rumour has it, however, that the Quota was designed in response to a request for a desert-capable motorcycle for Gaddafi's Libyan Army.
The design brief was for a robust vehicle, capable of 20 years' service on rough to non-existing roads with a 100-mile-per-hour top speed. Certainly, the Guzzi is tough enough, and there is a lot of steel to weld stuff to, but it would take a much better rider than me (Dale) to take it across the Sahara. Especially two-up. Especially fully loaded with a year's travel accessories.
After eight amazing years living in Oman, Qatar and Dubai, in April 2018 DALE and CHRIS BARTLETT flew their "Guzzi" to Cape Town. Attending HU Queensland 2015 and 2019 with added valuable tips and tricks to their kit.
Elizabeth Norman, Karakoram BikersPakistan - The Ins and Outs |
Crossing Pakistan falls into most overlanders' world rides. Whether it be arriving from China, India, Iran, and even now Afghanistan, Shah and Lizzy know the ins and outs of every corner of this most underated and misunderstood part of the world and have been supporting overlanders with all the nitty-gritty of visitng and crossing Pakistan since 2016.
From border entries, security alerts and protocols to the mind-blowing scenery and out of the way routes, hospitable people, and love of riding. Based out of their mountain home and traveller guesthouse in Gilgit, Northern Pakistan, they bring a presentation filled with fun stories and a beautiful journey to fulfill a dream. We welcome all motorbike adventure travellers and look forward to sharing our stories with you.
ELIZABETH and SHAH run a motorcycle travel company, Karakoram Bikers, that offers tours and support for overlanders in Pakistan. Liz shared details about travelling through Pakistan at the last HU Snowy Travellers Meeting, which was lots of fun. Liz and Shah have travelled through Asia, Pakistan, and southeast Asia, exploring independently by motorbikes and scooters.
Tim NealeSouth Island NZ - Easy Adventure Riding! |
This presentation is to inspire those who might want an easy, scenic adventure without the hassles. New Zealand is the mecca for adventure riders - empty highways, no potholes, not a straight road in sight, awesome people, sensational food, postcard views around every corner, and quality accommodation. Tim will cover choosing a bike, things to see and do, the route we took, accommodation options, and the glorious food on offer. It's not a budget-friendly place, but you might not care!
TIM NEALE has been riding bikes since he was a teen and currently rides a BMW F800GSA. He hasn't ventured too far from home yet, only NZ and around Queensland/NSW.
Workshops and Educational Sessions
...because Horizons Unlimited meetings are about information, not just inspiration!
Glen CochraneBike Mods |
What works and what doesn't for extended travel. Proven products tested or many years of off-grid adventure travel. Things to take and what to leave at home
GLEN COCHRANE has done several overseas trips. The longest was from Alaska to Ushuaia over three years and 120,000 km. That's plenty of time to think of how to make his motorcycle fit his needs.
Shane KuhlOpen forum on the psycho-social world of motorcycle travel! |
Shane will host an open forum of all the difficult questions and conversations we could, should and sometimes don't deal with. Like:
- How will the time away affect relationships?
- The pre-trip anxiety.
- The separation anxiety whist away.
- How has COVID affected travel?
- Should I leave a copy of my will, statement of choices, power of attorney somewhere handy?
And others. As a social worker, Shane has come to value having those conversations now that he may not have considered before. This will be an open discussion, hopefully leaving nothing on the table.
LOTS of presentations to come! As people register to present we'll list them here.
How about you? We're all here to learn, and there's LOTS to learn! We want to do more presentations and seminars, but we need volunteers to give them! Any topic you can contribute having to do with motorcycle travel, maintenance, planning, etc, lasting 20 minutes or more, would be great. Please contact us here to volunteer to tell your story, or teach us something!
We'll also need volunteers to help us run the meeting. Areas of need include: pre-meeting setup; registration/check-in area; audio/video setup; computer/IT issues; general "go-fer" assistance; post-meeting packing and cleaning up. Thank you!
You can sign up to volunteer when you register for the meeting, OR click here if you have already registered and want to add volunteering.

Martin WilliamsIs That Elephant Really Going to Eat My Motorcycle? |
There is no right or wrong way to organise a trip. For many, planning and researching are almost as much fun as doing. For me, it never seems to work out that way - despite best intentions (and regular self-admonitions that THIS time it will be different) - I always end up at the start unresearched and under-planned. This is the story of my last such trip and of how a supposedly four-month quick ride up the east side of Africa somehow stretched to eight months, and eventually took me from Cape Agulus in South Africa to Nord Kapp in Norway: a trip which involved many little adventures - losing my motorbike before I even started, watching it being molested by a hungry elephant in Zambia, getting detained by the army in Egypt, and even managing to lose one girlfriend at the start of the trip and finding another at the end. It reminded me that, if nothing else, lack of planning means you are never bored. What's around the next corner is always a complete surprise!
Georgia MelvilleFrom Scotland to Africa and back - 22 year old girl experiencing the world through solo motorcycle travel |
"You can't go by yourself its too dangerous". A statement I found to continually come from people's mouths the minute I indulged them with my plan...
Its not until you travel that you realize how wrong other people are about other countries. I found this statement to be incredibly true after returning from my three month adventure from Scotland to Africa and back on a BMW F650 GS. Looking forward to sharing my experiences, laughing a lot and inspiring others to get on the bike and head for the horizons.
"Originally born in Scotland and migrated to Australia in 2001, I am 22 years old and work for NSW as a Paramedic. I have travelled solo the last 2 years on and off riding a BMW F650GS from Scotland to Africa and back. I ride an F800GS when I am at home and have been all over Australia and NZ exploring. I love inspiring people to ride, especially women and showing that anything is possible if you set your mind to it."
Scott McMurtrie, Transcendant TravelPanamerica |
From the Arctic Circle to Ushuaia, having ridden over 50,000km in 16 countries through the Americas, Scott will present the great (and some not-so-great) moments, review the facts and figures from the trip (including budget vs. costs), and take your questions in an informal session.
Scott says: "Last Christmas, I was talking with my sister and discussing where in the world we would like to travel to. We both agreed that South America would be a great place to ride through and I immediately thought that the Pan American Highway would be an awesome ride. She pointed out that there may not be another opportunity for me to do such a trip and most people never get the opportunity to complete an adventure like this. So with that conversation the seed for the Panamericana trip was planted."
John HarpourQuick Spin Through the Himalayas |
Riding in Nepal was something of a happy accident. A cheap air fare and a moment of madness sent John and a couple of friends on a full-on, three-week trip into one of the most accessible, fascinating, and challenging countries that could have been tailor-made for adventure riders who are time (and money) poor. The distances covered are small, but the experiences are huge on this trip into the Annapurna range of the Himalayas. John shows you how to pack a whopping amount of adventure into a short period of time and do it on a ridiculously small budget.
With a normal busy life, John isn't an overlander by any stretch of the imagination. By focusing on achievable budget-conscious travel, however, he has crossed Australia, wobbled about California, done New Zealand, been terrified in India and awestruck in Nepal...so far...with much more to come.
David HicksChoose Your Own Adventure |
1. Choose Your Own Adventure
Do adventures have to be long overseas trips? Do adventure bikes have all the farkles? Do adventurers have to give up their jobs? Deciding to go on an adventure can be challenging enough, but what about when you start hearing that you *must* do this or *have to* buy this, have this experience, have these skills? David considers himself an adventurer, but not because of any single trip. Riding in the front paddock on a borrowed bike with second-hand safety gear, on overnight trips less than 100 km from home, whether on the Mongolia steppes on a hire bike or sleeping in 5 star hotels, adventure is what you make it! Find out how to choose an adventure that suits you and how to make it happen.
2. I Would Ride 5,000 Miles, I Would Ride 5,000 More
A wild story about a casual ride through the nordic countries, Russia, the "Stans" and Mongolia to the ends of the earth. After embracing the idea of taking a year off from work to "follow his bliss", David started working on a plan for one of the all-time legendary status trips: London to Magadan. Inspired in equal parts by Walter Colebatch and adventuring souls in his past, David set off on his first solo overseas trip, with a little bit of language, a few online contacts, his HU password, a handful of throttle, and a heart full of hope. Hear the story of an epic trip that has shaped his life.
After working all over rural Australia, David opted for a desk job in civil engineering. Encouraged by his wife, he rekindled his boyhood love of long trips on two wheels. Flying 'rockstar' trips, riding local roads, across the arctic circle, through the "Stans", crossing the Simpson, riding the TAT and working to ride, David is the definition of making up your mind and doing it.
Andrea BrosnanHow Do You Say "Hospital" in Mongolian? |
1. How Do You Say "Hospital" in Mongolian?
It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime. It was certainly and adventure! On her honeymoon in Mongolia with the wind in her face and the steppes in her soul, Andrea had a near fatal accident that changed her life. Find out what happens when everything you planned does not go according to plan.
2. Get On the Damn Bike!
Andrea is a novice rider, intermediate traveller, and expert storyteller. Growing up in Queensland, she was encouraged by her family to travel and adventure as much as possible. Having lived on four continents and moved more than 36 times, she is well-versed in visa requirements, packing, and the thrill of the unknown.
Brian and Shirley Hardy-Rix, Aussies OverlandRTW two-up! and Roads Less Travelled London to Melbourne |
Two up around the world
We rode from the bottom of South America to the top of Alaska. A lap of Western Europe and southern Africa before heading home to Australia. 16 months on the road, more than 82,000 ks through 32 countries. We crossed the Andes, deserts, visited Antarctica and Galapagos. It was the ride of our lives!
London to Melbourne on roads less travelled
We left London with a year to get home to Melbourne. We were on the Isle of Man for the TT and rode the circuit on Mad Sunday. We travelled through the European heatwave and down the Dalmatian coast, through Greece and Turkey. Into Iran and then Pakistan where we had to ride under armed guard on some dangerous roads. We rode high into the Karakoram mountains, then through Nepal, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore and home into Darwin.
Shirley and Brian have written a book about their travels: Circle to Circle - a journey through the Americas and beyond. The book will be available at the event - get your copy signed by the authors!
Rachel Barley and Ken CarseAre We Really Going to Do It? |
1. Are We Really Going to Do It?
Sahara to the Arctic Circle... a look at making the decision to go and then what goes into preparation and planning for the big trip. It all starts with what is, in some ways, the easiest decision, but in many ways the hardest - actually committing to go! From then it is all about planning, preparation and hope. Through 16 countries (some more than once), multiple ferry trips, riding in weather from 30+ desert to 2 degrees with snow, staying in accomodations ranging from camping and staying with friends to BnB and 5-star hotels, and riding on everything from goat tracks to a track day at Gotland raceway all with only three pre-bookings before leaving. It takes a lot of planning and preparation for "impromptu" travel!
2. Travelling Light & Where It Can Get You
From the Sahara to the Arctic Circle: what to take, what not to take, how to stow it and how to secure it so you can walk away from the bike without worrying (too much). Travelling light takes on new meaning when travelling two-up on a long journey. What do you pack to travel through 16 countries over six months, riding in climates from 30+ desert to 2 degree with snow, camping and riding in remote country? And how do you fit it all on a bike? Rachel and Ken will share what they did and where they went over six months.
Rachel and Ken rode 24,000km in six months travelling from the Sahara in Morocco north to the Arctic Circle in Sweden and Norway, and then from the Isle of Man in the west over to Prague in the east, and seemingly everywhere in between. They are now planning a trip to Tasmania and their next European adventure.

Tex O'GradyTex and Bundy - Charity Fundraisers |
Tex and his Cattle dog Bundy talk about their charity work, the adventures together as they travel the length and breadth of Australia. Also hear about Tex's successful attempt at the Around Aust' Record in 1978, 15,500 klm's in just under 9 days!
Tex & Bundy are a well known Australian motorcycling, charity fundraising duo. An Aussie bloke (Tex) and his stumpy tailed cattle dog (Bundy) who love & live to ride together, Tex & Bundy have ridden over 600,000km together for charity all around Australia supporting countless charities.
Peter and Kay Forwood, 193 Countries on a Harley! How this motorcycle became the World's Most Traveled Motorcycle! |
Shane KuhlPocket Adventures - How to have an affordable adventure before the boss even knows you're gone! |
Adventures in our our backyard, starting with a motorcycle tour of East Timor and then looking at various Internet and other resources to make travelling within Australia both exciting and affordable. Shane describes himself as the clumsy traveller. "If one learns from their mistakes, I must be the smartest traveller in Australia. I've managed to leave parts of motorcycles in many locations in Australia."
Helen BlackHow to be a chicken in Turkey (& Iran) - A novice rides around Turkey & Iran on a cheap ebay bike |
Purchasing a $1000 bike of ebay in England and riding solo around Turkey and Iran, Helen proves that you don't need expensive gear or heaps of experience to fulfill your desire for adventure. This is a humorous story of how a 'chicken' discovers amazing landscapes, friendly people and the nerve to keep going.
In her forties and after been given a double on the back of her partners bike, Helen decided this motorbiking thing was horribly scary, so she'd better be on the front!
Grant and Susan Johnson, Horizons UnlimitedHow it all began. The story of Grant and Susan's 11-year trip around the world, without a plan or a clue! |
Way back in 1987, before the Internet, two young and naive Canadians set out from Vancouver to ride around the world on a motorcycle. The plan (and budget) was for 3 years, but it didn't quite work out that way!
11+ years later, they finally made it, through 50 countries - Europe, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, North and South America, with a side trip to Antarctica! Hundreds of great pics and some amazing stories!

HU Queensland Supported Charity
The HU Queensland Supported Charity is Happy Paws, Happy Hearts (HPPH), whose mission is 'Creating positive changes for people and rescue animals'.
Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH)is a unique community promoting inclusion and happiness. It is a place where people and animals come together to break down personal barriers and create space for change through fun, curated programs.
In Australia, 1.1 million people experience social isolation or exclusion. At RSPCA alone, over 124,000 animals are waiting for adoption every year.
Born to address these pressing social issues, Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) is a national organisation that offers in-shelter and online programs, purposefully designed to connect socially isolated people and animals.
Working hand in hand with RSPCA and other animal shelters, Happy Paws Happy Hearts provides a safe space and community for vulnerable people to come together and share a mutual love of animals, while learning new skills and giving back in a meaningful way.
Our unique approach takes participants out of the training room and into shelters, ensuring that participants have the necessary support, environment, and “hands-on” opportunity to do their best development and learning.
Other Accommodation
The onsite accommodation is targeted for people travelling on motorcycles and is not suitable for larger vehicles such as cars, caravans, small trucks and recreational vehicles. Furthermore, there is an unpaved track from the front gate to the event area and so some consideration will need to be given to this.
Possible offsite accommodation options. Be sure to consider the distance from the off site campground to Kokoda Park when working out travelling times.
Air BnB accommodation is available in the region, but it may be up to a 35 minute drive. Do your research and book early.
Traditional motels, hotels and caravan parks are available in Gatton and Plainlands. Do your research and book early.

Information about the area
Thornton is a rural locality in the Lockyer Valley Region, Queensland, Australia. In the 2021 census, Thornton had a population of 214 people, so it is a rural location.
The nearest medical assistance is in Laidley, 20 minutes away. That is just two private medical centres. Nearest public centre is Gatton, 35 minutes away.
History
The traditional owners of the Lockyer Valley region are the Kitabul, Yuggera and Ugarapul people. The Lockyer Valley experienced a period of fierce conflict between the First Nations people and white settlers in the 1800s. The First Nations people were defeated and their numbers were further drastically reduced by European diseases, dispossession of land and other activities. The recently built viaduct as part of the Toowoomba bypass was named after one of the most powerful warriors, Multuggerah.
Location, riding, places to go
The nearest towns are Laidley, Plainlands and Gatton. Plainlands is on the intersection with a major highway, the Warrego highway that stretched between Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and beyond.
Local motorcycling riding is excellent, offering quite a variety of road surfaces and scenery. I work in Lockyer Valley and the scenery in all directions is very uplifting, every day. Stay alert though. Challenges include water on road, local wildlife ( I recently hit a hare in my car ), local stock, farm machinery and potholes/road damage.
Roadsides stalls are common, as are lookouts and tourist stops such as pioneer villages and the Laidley Heritage Trail.
There is an excellent transport museum in Gatton. It is temporarily closed to undertake repairs to the building and hopefully it will be open again by May 2025.
Other places to visit include Das Neumann Haus in Laidley and "Floats Cafe" in Grantham. A little further along the Warrego Highways id Spring Bluff Railroad Cafe.
An absolute must for lovers of traditional German foods is Schulte's at Plainlands. Be sure to buy a wurst to share with your host!

New to Horizons Unlimited?
Horizons Unlimited was founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson following their journey around the world on a BMW R80 G/S motorcycle. The website, HUBB forum and regular events across the globe have inspired thousands of people to follow their dreams and take the road less travelled.
Membership - Show you're proud to be a Horizons Unlimited Traveller!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love overland adventure travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events such as this one (18 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
You can join at a reduced rate as part of your meeting registration. Note that new Memberships with your Meeting Registration are applied as of the Meeting date or as soon as possible thereafter, not earlier, unless you make a special request in the Comments box when you register.
