Shipments done by Travellers

Sea freight via Singapore was arranged at 50 US dollars per cubic metre (Crated) inside a shared container (20 foot container). Mr Koestanto accompanied me to the port and sorted out the crating of the bike, carnet inspection and all other paperwork with minimum of difficulty.

The charges in Jakarta were as follows:

Shipping - 3.29 cubic metre crate at 50 US per metre - 164.50 US

(NB I could have squeezed the bike into a much smaller space if I'd really tried - but I crammed a load of other bags and stuff in the crate too - slightly risky, but all my gear arrived intact and untouched.)
Bill of lading fee - 20 US
Customs charges 50,000 rupiah = 5 US approx
Crate materials, labour and packaging = 850,000 rupiah = 85US approx

Total charges in Jakarta were therefore = 280 US approx.

Shipping via Singapore takes about 3 weeks. Once the ship arrives in Sydney, unloading takes about another week to ten days. Keep phoning them to check on progress!

Charges in Sydney - this was where it started getting expensive!

Port service charges - 180 Aus dollar = 90 US dollar approx
Terminal Handling fee - 40 Aus dollar = 20 US dollar approx
Delivery order fee - 50 Aus dollar = 25 US dollar approx
Sea Cargo Automation - 12 Aus dollar = 6 US dollar approx
Quarantine inspection fee -72 Aus dollar=35 US dollar approx
Rental of warehouse space where quarantine inspection takes place (can you believe this???) 55 Aus dollar =27 US dollar approx
Disposal of crate after uncrating (this is really going too far!)
80 Aus dollar = 40 US dollar

Charges in Sydney therefore 489 Aus = 245 US dollar approx.

Total cost of whole procedure = 525 US dollars

Note - It is VERY IMPORTANT to find a pressure washer in Jakarta and give the bike a good clean before crating. The Aussie quarantine guys check under your belly pan and mudguards for muck and if they find any they will require the bike to be pressure cleaned again by quarantine staff at your expense! This costs around 100 Aus dollars, so is worth avoiding! (NB Would you believe, they also check your tent pegs for dirt! Make sure they are clean! Thankfully, inspection of your underwear does not appear to be part of the procedure.....)

Crating and fumigation and handling plus all fees in malaysia included, u get a free ride to the train station, if u behave nicely. guy has shipped a dozen bikes this year already.

The guy to ask for is Rajeev Bhatia.
He will find out the cheapest flight for you and the bike.

For me the cheapest was Indian Arlines. For my bike it was Thai Air.

Thai Air Cargo charge you
55 IR / Kg below 300 kg
50 IR / Kg below 500 kg
35 IR / Kg abow 500 kg.

You always have to pay a fuel charge of 2 IR/kg If the volume/ kg is higher then the wait the charge you be this.

You can calculate this by multiplying the measurements of your bike and divide it by 6000. This is the formula for cm. In inches you have to divide by 366.

So you can figure out yourself how much you have to take your bike apart to get the cheapest rate. They told me this is an international formula so you can use it also for any other shipping.

The bike has to be in a crate which doesn't mean a full box. They want a full base and than just a frame around the bike. In the airport you will find guys who want to build you something that weighs 50 kg and you have to ad 5 cm on every side. And they do this for 5000 IR only. I didn't pay that.

In the main bazaar you can find a carpenter who does it for 1000 IR and if you know an Indian who helps you, you can find some for 500 - 600 IR. I went out and got some wood for 400 IR and nails for 20 IR and built it myself. Not so difficult. And I could test how small I could get my bike packed.

The transport to the airport cost me 500 IR but you can get it cheeper if you have time to organize it befor. But take care- you are in India. My appointment for 300 IR did not show up. For entering the cargo terminal it is 20 IR for the truck. Terminal charge was 330 IR.

Then the fun starts with the paperwork. It's a nightmare I quickly find out. But after I hired a helper for 400 IR including the guys who help you to carry your bike around it was good fun and I coud enjoy all this chaos.

Bus 780 stops in front of the cargo terminal and brings you back to the main city for 10 IR.

After arriving in Bangkok I went with shuttel bus No. 2 to the cargo terminal. Thai cargo gave me the papers and then I found Yut, a nice Thai who helped me with custems and everything for 400 Bath ( Yuthachai Tel: 01-9024015 ).

2 hours and I was at my bike. 2 1/2 and my bike was rebuilt and I was on the streets of Bangkok. A peltol pump is at the gate of the cargo terminal. All too easy. Then you can plan another 3 hour antill you are in Banglamphu. Oliver "

We flew with Thai Air and the bikes have to be crated.
Crate size one bike: 181*60*102 cm.
Weight one bike: 226 kg.
Four aluminum boxes as separate cargo: 81 kg.
Prices: <500 kg is US$ 1.37/kg ; >500 kg US$ 1.07/kg.

We paid for two bikes: 2 * 226 kg + 81 kg = 533 kg. 533 kg * 1.07 = US$ 570.
Other costs (handling, clearing, airwaybill, customduty and crating) for two bikes: US$ 180. Total for two bikes: US$ 750.

Personal oneway ticket: US$ 220 (Thai air)

At Bangkok cargo we paid 500 Baht / bike =(US$ 12) for security handling charge and delivery order fee.

note: at the cargo termimal in bangkok some smart guys come to help you and they "charge" a lot of money. (in our case they want US$ 140). Ignore these guys and go to the Custom information office. They will help you and show you the offices where to go.

Cost dependent on weight. Also some form of export tax payable to customs. I drained the fuel, disconnected the battery and deflated the tires. Fast, efficient and friendly service. Left the bike with them after watching it being strapped to a pallet. I collected it in London from the specified cargo handlers with no problems. I would use this shipping company again.
