Hi Grant,

we're now sure that we can attend the meeting, so we registered just now. However, there was a problem with the T-Shirt link - it didn't work. I am not sure if it was our problem or if there is something wrong....?

Cheers,
Heike & Filippo

Thanks Heike and Filippo!

There are no t-shirts for Thailand Meeting, sorry. I do need to fix the page so it says that, so thanks for reminding me!

From Singapore in 3 Weeks?

We've just dropped the bikes off at the port in Yokohama so that they can catch a RORO to Singapore. They should be there on December 17 and I'm hoping we can be on the road by the December 21. That would give us 3 weeks to ride up to Chang Mai. Obviously this would be very rushed and we wouldn't see anything but that way we could gather collective wisdom on touring SE Asia at the HU meeting and then start our tour from Chang Mai.

Does this seem even remotely reasonable? We've never been in SE Asia before and have no idea if riding 2,700 km in three weeks is even possible but would love to attend the HU event. We could even drum up a bit of a slideshow if called upon.

The path from Singapore to Chiang Mai the main and secondary roads are all in pretty good condition. No problem to average 70 to 80km/h. You could make it in 5 relatively easy 500km days.

Final Agenda and Schedule for January 11-12

The Horizons Unlimited Mini-Meeting Thailand is an all volunteer meeting, with no fees charged to attend a “free” (sponsored) Welcome Reception for one hour and 15% discount off meals ordered from the menu, donated by the Rider’s Corner Bar and Restaurant, on Friday night. Nor is there any fee charged to attend the Saturday Mini-Meeting. The Rider’s Corner also does not charge Horizons Unlimited a fee for the use of their facility both evenings and has even purchased all the media equipment (projector, screen, PA system). If you get a chance, thank the owners (Som and Phillip Gibbins) for their most generous donations to our event.

Friday evening is a time for serious local motorbike riders and enthusiasts from the Golden Triangle to welcome travelers and adventurers to Thailand. On Saturday night there will be a 15 minute break between speakers/presentations to allow the restaurant service staff to clear the tables, fill orders and allow attendees to stretch and visit the facilities.

On both evenings, before the presentations begin, we will “pass the microphone” around the audience giving attendees a chance to tell us who they are, where they are from and what they are doing in Chiang Mai/Thailand/SE Asia.

This will be the 7th HU Traveller’s event in SE Asia. They have a wide variety of local and global avid motorcycle enthusiasts attending, some on ‘round the world tours, others dreaming of making a long journey in the future. Registrations from distant countries like the following have already signed up: Republic of South Africa, Ecuador, Argentina, France, Canada, Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Poland, United States of America, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

They also have several global motorcycle personalities, journalists and members of the media/press who will join us as observers, wishing to mingle rather than be in the spotlight.

Below is the latest/final Agenda/Schedule for the HU Mini-Meeting.

All meals ordered are at 15% off, compliments of the Rider’s Corner Bar and Restaurant for Horizons Unlimited. This is an open mixer for any serious motorcyclist or Horizons Unlimited travellers that happen to be in Chiang Mai for the Mini-Meeting January 12 or just wanting to drop in and meet other like-minded serious and adventurist motorcyclists.

New to Horizons Unlimited?

New to motorcycle travelling? New to the HU site? Confused? Too many options? It's really very simple - just 4 easy steps!

Horizons Unlimited was founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson following their journey around the world on a BMW R80G/S.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
